Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

That’s the shape I see them here but thankfully never had to try and move one. Think of that back of yours mate!
When I was 16/17 ish I helped out a farmer by working on the top floor of his hay loft as they sent the rectangular bales through the opening for me to lift up and stack neatly. The hardest work over a short period of time I’d ever done, the heat , dust in the air , weight etc just about did for me. I was sweating like a pig and drinking gallons of water , so much so I was sick later. I never went back!

I'd take the rectangular one over the round ones every day of the week.

Easier to move and store.

Keeping the round one dry and secured will be a nightmare.

Morning everyone,

Thanks for all the kind granny wishes.

Getting exciting at BMD , they are even starting stadium tours in September 😂.

We normally get rectangular bales of hay for the goats and sheep. Not light but you can get a couple in the wheelbarrow and take them down to the animal pen which is at the bottom of the garden some way away.( @anjelikaferrett and @Val P know what I'm talking about about ).

However our local farmer told me they aren't doing that anymore but are doing 3ft high circular bales. " OK no problem can you deliver me one "

Came home to find a circular bale 5ft high and over 3ft in diameter.

It took 2 of us to push it onto it's side and roll it ( fortunately) downhill to the pen - only catch it it's not straight as we have a meandering grass path - it's the most fun we've had in years but we were knackered by the time we got it into the pen and secured it.

More visits from the District Nurse and Occupational therapist today so it isn't always fun at Jazzy Towers.

Have a lovely day everyone.
A little trolley seems the best for them and you .

They’re currently harvesting the field behind our house, last year Mrsbl was most upset as they came out in rectangular bales. Our farming friend had told me that rectangular ones usually go to pigs, so she wasn’t happy and wanted the old “ round “ ones back. At the moment they’ve taken the barley off and just left the straw in the field awaiting the baler . Will it be round or rectangle? We live an exciting life , full of mystery , anticipation and unknowns up here 🙂
They are doing around us ,we both smile when we see them and I have no real idea why . We are in the round camp over here

There is a bit in Big Dunc’s book where he explains that his Dad never went to a gym yet was a very powerful man. It was all work muscle (a Rigger) and that trumps lifting weights any day of the week.

Here you go, this will tide you over until the big day 😀

And the string twine they used to bind the bales. It would cut into your hands and leave minute threads in the broken skin - gloves weren't obligatory back in those days (pre-1980's and earlier). You either had agricultural hands or you didn't and, unfortunately, I was the latter but it was still great being asked to help with my Grandad's hay baling during our Summer holiday visits and riding on the old MF tractors.

Yep we too are in the round camp, they win hands down from an aesthetic point of view , although as jazzy says rectangular definitely easier to move .

Back then the only way I could lift or move dem bales was by grabbing the twine with bare hands and I never mastered it, I was better at tattie picking and strawberry picking though 🙂

Tatty picking, when the potato fields had been crop picked and there were still thousands of spuds lying on the top. We would help the grandparents collect bags and bags and then store them in a cool dark 'bire' which kept them from going off. Lasted them for months throughout Autumn and into the Winter.

And they were the proper Irish floury variety. Happy times.

Afternoon all, I have zero to offer to this farming thread except I once got bitten by a Shetland pony at a petting zoo. It all sounds like fun I think 🤔.
An exciting weekend ahead - we’re off to a wedding near Clitheroe tomorrow, staying overnight then straight down to Liverpool for the friendly. Booked the Titanic again a while back in anticipation of hubby’s potential limited mobility.
So an early have a nice weekend from me and COYBs! 💙
