Cricket

The 50 over one day cup started today. Lancashire still insisting on playing at Sedbergh ; have a guess at the only match where play was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Perhaps this is a controversial opinion, but I don't mind The Hundred. Whilst it definitely does not lay a glove on test cricket, it has provided for some entertaining matches in the short time it has existed and even bought some players to my attention whom I would not have otherwise noticed.

Test cricket in this country is not just surviving, it is flourishing. The recent series against India demonstrated that. My main issue with The Hundred is that the format seems a bit unnecessary when you already have the T20 Blast - why not expand the Blast? Clearly there is an audience for the shorter formats, it's just a matter of attracting them to county clubs to watch T20 Blast games. Although some money is already trickling down into the counties, it remains to be seen whether that money will have any benefit for the county game.

Hilarious that we had a 20/20 competition, then the ECB invent a new format so they can monetise it. They then get £550 million and the guys who pay that want to turn it into a 20/20 format. What a waste of their money.

Agreed. The Hundred is good telly. Nice to get home from work and watch a short-form game of cricket. Love Test cricket but you can miss most of it due to work and kids (didn't see the finale of the last test on Monday because of work, for e.g.)

Also I think it's good for the women's game and, if you look at the crowds that go to The Hundred games, families. Loads of kids in the crowds. Even my Mrs likes watching The Hundred and she couldn't give a stuff about cricket.

The fact that there are various different cricket formats that attract different crowds doesn't detract from cricket, it actually highlights what a great, great game it is.

It's a format that nobody else plays, so it doesnt align with international cricket formats and cutters an already cluttered county cricket season.

It has unique rules (which might be good rules) but they are different from every other cricket format.

I know it wasn't part of the question you asked, but the weird "city franchises" which aren't actually cities is just odd when you already have a very well established county structure.

These are all perfectly fine criticisms for when the Hundred was created, the names are terrible, the crisps ethically questionable, the claim that women and children can't understand overs offensive, but it's a thing now and it's going to continue being a thing (still cluttering the calendar). How does changing its different rules back to T20 rules benefit the viewer? Does it matter to anyone apart from the new rich tech owners that it doesn't align with other franchises around the world? Won't it just be stupid that it'll still be called the Hundred but it won't mean anything anymore?

You're onto a winner. Make it a race. Fastest to a ton wins. Batspersons fielders and bowlers, you get your 10 wickets. Score the ton or get all out.

Blitzkrieg cricket. Critzkrieg if you will.
