I know next to nothing about this kid, but that's a big ask for what is mainly potential. The fee is probably about standard, but 25% of the sell-on takes a huge chunk out of any development we put in, and impacts our ability to replace him.

I guess it all depends now on how much we want him specifically. If Southampton don't absolutely fly out of the traps in the first 3-4 games before the deadline, their "we are happy to keep him to help us get back into the PL" line starts to look a bit shaky, and maybe they relent. Any other year I'd say call their bluff if we really want him, but this Summer needs to be a little bit more Supermarket Sweep for us, so let him fester on the South Coast and move on.
I’d leave it. That’s now reached a huge burden of a fee for a kid who or may not be a superstar. He got homesick last time he left the south coast (not a criticism) and we aren’t exactly patient.

Either that or pay whatever they want 4 seconds before the deadline so they can’t reinvest.

Quick peep into the thread....yep still same knicker wetting...and toys being thrown out.

Back to looking busy at work it is then...

…..notice a sizeable shift from ‘just pay the difference’ to ‘walk away’.

I have no strong views on the player but where there’s no other clubs competing to bid, these things normally get sorted, especially if the player is also pushing for the move.

I have a feeling McAtee isn't happening and we've shifted.

Most have disagreed with me when I've said it for months, but I don't think Liverpool sell us Doak

i have a feeling we dont really know what we're doing, and that they could see mcatee as viable for around 35mil

Doak looks like he wants to play first team football. Wolves and West Ham the other two interested. I'm sure he'd rather come here

Pickford was signed for 25M based on potential but this one could go either way, Dibling has got the potential to be VERY good but not Bale standards, I’d be cautious paying such an extravagant fee.

Maybe. But he calls out the state of the squad.

Moyes has nothing to gain that is different to the club overall. He knows it's not progressing anywhere near quick enough, pre season nearly over.
Moyes is not the personification of the club , he is an employee of the club.
If he had nothing to gain personally, why were the negative comments not voiced privately to those who it concerned.
The only reason to go public I can see is to shift blame and to protect your own position.
How does that benefit the club as a whole ?

That's the transfer game in a nutshell isn't it? Clubs at our level have to take chances and hope they pay off on the pitch and in terms of onward transfers down the line. I'll say again that - as absolutely bananas as it is - ~£50m incl. add-ons for a transfer like this would raise very few eyebrows. Where I have an issue is that the sell-on drastically reduces our chances of financial upside if he does do well; if we want to be a "buy (relatively) low, sell high" club then that is what should stop us in our tracks on this one.

Yeah
I am always dubious about the accuracy of such reports , I doubt journalists are privy to all the information, they are told only that which benefits the informant .
I do suspect in this case that Southampton are keen to ensure they are seen as negotiating a good price for a local talent .
I think you are correct that a deal will be done , probably undisclosed fee, which in reality will have numerous add ons and sub clauses which will make the final price hard to decipher, and allow both clubs to publicly claim satisfaction.

All of that mate, there is a PR and optics peice here for both clubs.

I’d be amazed if we’ve been given permission to speak to the lad and been talking to Southampton for a week - that there is still a surprise in counter bidding 10 mill in valuation and 25% clauses.
