speed 2, 47 ronin, and countless reruns of gogglebox, and these two get shunted around to make way for such codswallop.

There is a rare treat on tv this evening.

10pm BBC four.

Academy award winner for 1966, 'The war game',
"Controversial drama that depicts the consequences of a nuclear attack on Britain. The terrible aftermath of a nuclear bomb in Kent is portrayed in the style of a news programme. Written and directed by Peter Watkins, The War Game won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1966, even though the BBC decided not to show it when it was made as 'the effect of the film has been judged by the BBC to be too horrifying for the medium of broadcasting'. The film was finally televised on 31 July 1985."

There's a preview on to introduce it. 10 minute preview, 45 minute doc, then another gem from another time, a preview of 'threads' by it's writer and director followed by the full film.

Only watched Threads fairly recently, but had been oblivious to 'The war game'. The hysteria around which is giving me the feel of the knee jerk conservative activistism of whitehouse and her shrill bunch re 'Cathy come home'. (also 1966).

For the other element of fandom on this fine forum, 'the rock' is on itv4 at 9pm.
@Davidoff

This film, 'the war game' actually turns up verbatim in 'the Simpsons', specifically, 'Sideshow Bob's last gleaming', s07e09.

I hadn't seen the war game previous, but the writers of the Simpsons had. Fascinating.

Fascinating indeed, ill check it out if on iplayer, never heard of it
It appears to me to be the forerunner to 'Threads'. Now, threads is no walk in the park, but TWG really pulls no punches. The testimony out of the Dr's is something else, and the very clear parallels to a certain period 41-45 are frightening. I can see why it was pulled, I can see why it was canned till the mid 80's, and now, 40 years on broadcast again at last.

The war of the worlds scared me a long time ago, and it was only the radio version, the visuals in this are ground breaking in their viscera.

Only saw Threads recently myself, things like this should be mandatory viewing. Not little known artistic gems

Have seen 'Threads' a few times, so it doesn't have the same impact now. TWG is B&W. The ignorance is startling.

TWoTW scared people in 1938, to the point where mass exodus of cities occurred. Radio stuff. TWG got an Oscar. In the prelude thing, they explained it's creator had been guaranteed it'd be broadcast. The bbc under persuasion from governance pulled it. He quit the bbc on the spot and left the country, forever!

Hats off. That's proper reaction that.

Was Jack O connel meant to be a no ja Jimmy Saville? Thought it was ok up to date but that was ridiculous

Jack O`Connel was Jimmy Crystal ( Jimmy Saville ) in it and his followers are the Flying Jimmies. ( the little boy at the beginning in the church, who`s dad is the crazy priest )

Him and the flying Jimmies are going to be some of the main characters in the follow on in January, so the cameo at the end was the audiences introduction to him / them.

Thought the film was a mess tbh and O`Connel and his crazies at the end lifted it out of the mess, as they just came out of nowhere and at least provided a bit of a laugh ( whether it was intentional or not )

The new "war of the worlds" I am honestly stumped here, I can't think of any words to describe it, I don't mind movies were you can just remove brain and enjoy but this is awful, spend your time flailing your body and rolling around in coarse salt,it will bring you more joy

Terminal velocity legend 9pm
Commando film4 9pm
Jack Reacher itv4 9pm

Rather poor offerings this evening, Kinski worth a look in the first, Arnie in one of his most ludicrous roles, and more Tom Cruise.
