Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

Setting a fixed value you won't go above for a player as a club time sounds great in principle, in reality it means if you've misjudged the market place then you risk ending up missing out your primary and secondary targets.

Truth is overpaying for players is not what gets a club in a mess, it's overpaying on wages that does.

Check out our overall spending and what we recouped from sakes under moshiri up until the point we got in a financial mess. Net spend was actually pretty low surpassed by most teams in the league - what killed us was offering salaries like we had the income of the rs. Mina, Iceland, Williams, Bolassie, Allan, etc yes we overpayed on fees for most, but the killer was we then paid them commensurate salaries according to the fees - Iceland was on around 30-40k at the swans - cos we paid so much for him we then upped his wages to around 130-150k, Williams similarly went onto around 100k pw from around 30.

Pay Lyon what they want, pay city what they want - it won't really do much to us - as long as we don't suddenly throw 130k offers to Fofana and Mcatee.

Forest for example will spend big on fees over the odds even, but on wages they had MGW and Elanga on 80 and 60k PW.

Under moshiri it seemed like he had this idea that spending huge fees has to have huge wages attached almost like that made the player more valuable or better by doing so.

Fofana and Mcatee should both be players we match whatever offers they have it ideally exceed them in order to narrow down competition. IF we want to genuinely build a team which can progress being too rigid on valuations isn't the way to do that.
It's both. If we pay £50m for McAtee and it turns out actually he's a £20m player then that's an enormous problem, obviously. Overpaying on fees is every bit as much of an issue as overpaying on wages. The 2 are also linked, we didn't just randomly decide to give people massive wages on a whim, it was what we were using to attract them here and the same would apply to anybody that we were overpaying for. It's also a bargaining chip for the player, if they know you have them banked as a £50m asset they want pay which reflects it.

With the type of player being lined up I wonder are we going to see a switch of tactics to being an out and out 4-3-3 on the counter. That would allow Aznou to do his thing much more then the 4-5-1 counter of last season that accommodated Mycos defensive frailties. I am still wary about the amount of players we will have that will go to the AFCON. I'm well aware that the comp is only a month but that breaks down league momentum should we have some and puts last seasons 1st x XI back on the pitch. That I do not ever want to see again once the new season starts.

All well and good, but it doesn't work like this in reality.

No agent worth their salt is going to allow a player who's transferred for £50m to sign a contract on £50k per week.

Their argument, quite rightly, is that if you value a player at £50m then you pay them accordingly.

It doesn't necessarily work the other way, unfortunately. If a player is on big wages already, the selling team might let them go for a lower figure so the overall package is affordable enough for the buying club (usually because the selling club wants them off the payroll).

Unless I have missed something, we won't be anywhere near McAtee especially if rumours are true that City have rejected 25mil from Notts Forest.
Yep, but Forest are about to sign Ndoye and have kept MGW. So their interest in McAtee would presumably have lessened slightly.

McAtee will move for more than £25m and less than the £42m that City are briefing. All depends where in the middle you meet as to whether it's good value or not.

According to The Guardian - Notts Forest bid £20m +£5m add-ons for McAtee - my personal opinion is £30m + £5 add-ons might be acceptable and if we’re still interested that’s a bid we need to make.

Give you the fofana deal as looks like bid wasnt to much under but as said here mcatee has been 25 mill bid rejected. Rumours saying want 40 and to be in last year of deal we simply cant pay that
