Transfer Rumour Adam Aznou

And half a season without - whilst using a CB at right back and it was still top 4.
Even under Moyes we didn't play high up the field. We played on the counter attack. He's done ok against Salah and Saka because the entire team is set up to stop them. We're not just leaving him 1v1 because we know he would get rinsed by them.

Mykolenko as a player who can play LB at a solid, unspectacular level and CB in a 3 if needed. He is a solid squad player for our situation but as a regular starter he is limiting, even given Moyes improving him.

If we land Aznou and this year he pushes him and the season after he replaces him that would represent the kind of ideal outcome from a sensible investment we have watched clubs like Brighton do whilst we have been financially restricted to just patching now.

We will still so a bit of late window patching given the scale of our squad gaps but it is nice to see us starting to try to do more. I also see Barry and Beto similarly FWIW.

Ill be honest I think fans are expecting too dramatic of a jump in quality from this window. I wont say im all that familiar with Aznou but the logic of the buy is sound. He is a high grade prospect from one of the best academies in the world. Has hit each milestone of development thus far with some quality first team minutes all before age 20. All that for what looks like under 15 million.

You may not love Myko, but he is a lower median back in the EPL. He's disciplined almost to a fault, when given a narrow job at least capable. The first touch is poor, the attacking instances poor. His cross although improved far from noteworthy. But the tacking and clearance is convincing or serviceable most weeks.

For longterm aspirations he needs to be upgraded, but at present he isn't a reason we will get worse. Maybe Aznou beats him out day one, but we aren't reliant on that. Whats smart about this signing is the rawness of Aznou is reflected in a price that is affordable when our resources are thin. But Aznou's age and pedigree make him likely Myko's replacement no longer than a season or two out. That said if we had waited till next year it's very possible a prospect like Aznou has doubled their evaluation.

A horrible quality we have had is poorly planning likely squad turnover windows before they're dire. If we can buy a slightly rawer end prospect that saves 10 million in resources a year early when the starter is at least replacement value we should do so. It's a good context for a prospect to enter, having a starter beatable but not reliant in doing so year one. All while giving us more resources to allocate cross multiple positions.

Just to say if Aznou isn't day one starting I for one wont be panicked or think this is bad business.

We did need cover for LB and this is a great way to do it, push Mykolenko and have the opportunity to replace him.

But while I understand these things don't need to happen sequentially, it is pretty disheartening that there isn't even a whisper about a RB at the moment.

I always feel its overstated how good Mykolenko is defensively because it feels like the only part of his game that's alright since his efforts going forward are awful for a modern day full back. He's a decent defender at best, seen him be at fault for too many goals to call him a great defender.

Aznou seems to be more in the mold of a modern day full back. Being a defender first and foremost isn't wrong but I think its so vital to have attacking output coming from those areas to make other teams think twice about leaving space open out wide. With Mykolenko I feel teams know there isn't much to worry about which further limits space for players like Ndiaye as they can just commit more to him.

That’s how I see it. I think he’ll have to be very good to shake Mykolenko. Mykolenko has years of experience in the PL and when he’s alongside Branthwaite Tarkwoski he doesn’t make many defensive mistakes. I think if Moyes wanted a new starting left back it wouldn’t have been the profile of Anzou and he would have gone for someone like Chilwell or Shaw.

To some extent yes, but he has become a very good defender. He came here with the reputation as an attacker (doing very well in the European competitions) but he either didn't have it for this level, or it was coached out of him. Either way, it will take some effort (we saw some glimpses of it post-Dyche) to get him to a decent attacking level. I think there will be improvement but I don't know how much.

Funnily enough the issue at RB is a great example of why how we are treating LB being wise.

Currently RB is in need of immediate attention. We all know this but neither Coleman or Patterson are median EPL level at this point. Young's exit its obvious we are much worse than we were last year.

That means we enter the market with a lot more need of assurance. Whoever comes in has to be at least day one median EPL level but likely envisioned as a longterm starter. But also considering we have an eye on two three years down the pike we hope they can improve on their current level. All those necessary requirements makes it very plausible the fee ends up north of 30 million.

Where as at LB we have addressed that possible issue before it's a crisis. Aznou is afforded a good context to mature. We welcome him beating out Myko year one but arent reliant on it. And that is affording us a difference of likely 20 million in transfer resources between the two backs in the same window. Not to mention the likely fee saved in the future by not having to address LB in a future transfer.

Because we play uber defensively. Defending with 8 is easier than defending with 4.

Our defense is good imo. Good enough for Europe if we improve in attacking areas.

Right wing and a strong attacking midfield\ box to box player will improve us far more than replacing O’Brien or Myko where we are more likely to become worse defensively, imo.
