This is how the market works, you get to mid August and some of these lads just fall and look for the contract.

As reported yesterday the club are in contact with player reps and club - that doesn't sound like there isn't a deal there to me, might be unlikely or even ideal from the players point of view, but its not a flat walk away.

These young kids just want everything today don’t they. Desperate to go and join a squad of 35 and sit on the bench with all the other £30 million 21 year olds.

I do find this attitude to any player who chooses to back himself at the highest level odd.
Squad size these days means a good player will get game time and the chance to prove themselves and become first choice.
If you don’t have some self belief you aren’t likely to succeed anywhere .
At the very least you get to spend time getting top level coaching surrounded by high quality players . Even if you fail to become a regular , you have the opportunities to raise your game commensurately.
Obviously it’s disappointing for teams at our level , but until we are able to break the cycle and compete regularly at the highest level we will always struggle to recruit top level players.
Our scouting system really needs urgent attention.

If Malick Fofana and Jack Harrison are on the same list then that’s as sure a sign as any that these lads don’t have a clue what they’re doing.

The other side of the coin , I suppose , is that Harrison does have some attributes which can contribute to the squad .
He works hard , and is decent defensively.
As someone to introduce to the game to help protect a lead whilst retaining some offensive ( don’t laugh !) threat , he is useful.
He also knows the squad and manager.
But I really hope we can do better and can see no reason why we can’t.

Happens to every club, it’s not exclusive to us

Look at Spurs for example, triggered Gibbs-White’s release clause, got threatened with legal action and in the end the player got a bumper new deal out of Forest

The spurs mgw situation is different...maybe they did approach the player illegally and so decided not to go ahead with the signing to avoid any potential punishment

You can get a nod from the players camp without serious interest on their part. If a bid is accepted they they have a decision to make.

We're under time pressure now and probably unlikely to get this guy.

If he doesn't want to come here fair enough, but not at the expense of losing another who does want to be here.

These are the calls they have to make every day now, you can't bring it down to the wire if we want a decent sized squad.
