Thinking of going for a HGV license

Let's get the silliness out of the way first - prostitutes, murdering etc etc.

Right, I'm considering jacking in my job and retraining to be a HGV driver.

Anyone got any experience of the profession? Top tips, pros and cons etc.

As for why, well, I'm fast realising I'm badly suited to jobs that feature constant meetings, noisy offices full of bell ends, and the sheer pointlessness of 95% of my job. I quite like driving and the idea of not having to talk to folk too much.

Prostitutes, murder etc. Blah blah warning ⚠️ ⚠️ 🚨 🧜‍♂️ 🚨

What does the boss say?

Do you like driving that much?

Have you spoken to a professional in the industry right now with numerous years of experience to draw upon?

Apparently it's quite stressful, and deadlines and traffic and not having any time for keeping fit and eating properly and life on the road cooped up in a little cab, and weather, and never being home, and battling for contracts and never seeing anyone you know, and gaining weight, and there's millions of idiots on the road and and and.

Don’t pick up any hitchhikers in Calais ;)

I'll also admit to wanting to frustrate drivers on dual carriageways by slowly and painfully overtaking a marginally slower HGV. Everyone needs goals.

Oh God this was exactly like my last drive from Houston to Dallas. One of them was trying to overtake three HGVs all at once, and they were all driving below the speed limit. It took the best part of 10 minutes. Then the passing truck stayed in the passing lane and I zipped by it in the other lane before he could get over.

I sometimes think if I didn’t have a wife or kids, I might relish a job like driving an HGV. But the amount of brainless gammons in that line of work is truly terrifying.

Right, let's get this sorted straight away...

Constant meetings. Loved them. Chance to day dream

Noisy offices. Headphones. Looked like I was doing a "webinar". Another chance to day dream.

Bellends. Sorry nothing I can do about these. Every walk of life has them.

Pointlessness. Yup, that's working life.

Good luck however with whatever you decide to do.

Retirement, bliss!

Get yourself in a Scania truck whatever happens, those things are utter beasts, full of home comforts and extremely powerful.

A lot depends on where you live, check out indeed. Also there's plenty of youtubers out there to give you a feel for the industry.

In a nutshell:
Plenty of 4on4off work out there
Plenty of 'any 5 from 7' usually a sliding rota over a two month period.
Some mon-fri work out there

Class 2 (cat c) is hard graft and up to 20 drops a day, usually inner city and residential.

Class 1 (cat ce) longer distance and 1-4 drops per day. Much less work, and more pay.

Start times: usually stupid o'clock: chilled distribution for supermarkets between 22:00 - 3:30 for example

Some decent jobs out there, lots and lots of dreadful ones, but that's probably true of every industry.

A general apathy runs thru the industry, and you will be teated like an inferior being at times.

When things go wrong it will be all your fault, buck stops with the driver. And yes hgv drivers are more heavily regulated than airline pilots.
