The Oldies Thread

….played 5-a-side myself in The Rock around that time. Great Evertonian called Dave Wiggins also involved as we worked together around then, sadly Dave passed in the last few years but he was well known in EFC fan community and was a very decent footballer.
Good lad Dave, out of the blue when he went, kept himself fit and active.
He used to recall memories I still have no clue about. Big miss.

….Betty, my 97yo Mother-in-Law went into hospital last Boxing Day and we were convinced she was nearing the end but she’s a tough old cookie and pulled through. Before that, we’d be at her house 3 or 4 times per week to pick her up after a fall and post-hospital she’s had to go into care.

Anyway, it’s a situation lots of families will be familiar with. We assumed we’d have to sell he house to cover the care costs but Council suggested many people rent them out, which hadn’t occurred to us. Rental income + monies she gets from pension and allowances will pretty much cover weekly care costs.

Obviously renting comes with a downside but worth mentioning as an option for others in a similar situation.

Never realised this. My mother 89 and because of my brother passing away couple of weeks back she had to live alone first time in her life. There is a lot of pressure on me at the moment to move in permanently but I don't want to do that as it would mean if she passes I would have to sell house and find myself homeless. If she has to go into care though it would mean selling her house but renting could be an alternative

….sounds like you really need to fully understand where you stand from a legal perspective, Sue. Assuming your Mum owns the property and it passes to you, it would help if she has a will confirming this. Lasting Power of Attorney also allows you to make decisions for her and could be a consideration.

It’s not a one-size fits all situation, I suggest you make a few enquiries ;)

All that was sorted long time ago, when she passes the house goes to me and my younger brother

My - albeit with limited legal understanding - is that if Mum goes into a care home then at some point there will be a 'call' on her Estate for the costs IF she actually owns her own home. However, if you are in some way linked to her current home because you are residing there and paying towards the bills then, and only then, will the Care Home bills be claimable at which point you may have to sell up to pay them off. It's not like you have to do it immediately she enters care because no one knows for how long she will be in that situation.

But as @Eggs suggested you need to seek advice and CAB is a good starting point.

Btw, you may be entitled to Carers Allowance should you move back in with Mum esp. if she has any form of limiting disability. Another thing to look into.

I'm not moving back in, she very able to look after herself, she fitter than me, if in future she needs care then I can decide if I want to move in or pay for care. My brother died without leaving a will so she Next of KIN so will get what money he had so she not short of a bob or two.
