Yup, it's nonsense. Great players would be great players in any era. They'd adapt. Maradona is the greatest I have ever seen. Why? He was less successful and had less longevity than Messi, but he played at a time when defenders were allowed to saw legs off at the knee - and still made history. The Butcher of Bilbao, Claudio "the gentle touch" Gentile, and Antonio "Macho" Camacho were brutalists. The great creative players of the time were assaulted on a weekly basis. Bernd Schuster and Maradona had their bones shattered by the Butcher. Zico and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the two greatest players in the world going into the 1982 World Cup, were invalid substitutes by the 1986 World Cup.With all respect such comparisons are anachronistic and hopelessly futile.
A person can only thrive within the environment he exists.
While today’s players are undoubtedly more athletic, would they prosper or even survive in earlier times ?
Would they cope with the harder and more brutal ( by today’s standards) tackling ?
Would the sheer physicality of previous times negate their modern day abilities.
How would they fare in the days before substitutions , or even when only one substitute was allowed , when players had to play on carrying injuries that nowadays would warrant immediate withdrawal?
Ball excelled in the game , that is undeniable and to denigrate his standing by comparison to today’s game is not only foolish it’s deliberately disrespectful and devalues the game entirely.
Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo - magnificent players - were barely ever injured in their careers because the tackle from behind was outlawed and the offside rule was changed to make man-to-man marking redundant. Would they have succeeded in the 1980s? Undoubtedly. They were great players. Would they have played as many matches as they did? Not a prayer. Would they have suffered serious injury? Almost certainly. They would have succeeded, but instead of having 20-year careers at the top level, they might have played three World Cups and 10 seasons at the top.
