Well, this is it. What does it provide that justifies a subscription? Honestly, nothing to me, anyway. I'm old-school (and old, 53). Brian Glanville is my idea of a football journalist. I did a stint at Goal.com in the noughties looking after their German football pages. I argued that they should be publishing opinion pieces. Instead, they wanted me to regurgitate the latest headline from Kicker. I'm not sure things are much better at even paid-for sites like the Athletic with well-known writers.Wouldn't care as much if it was free but think it's audacious they charge you for "journalism".
How much great football insight did we see from journalists when Everton was on the brink over the last four years? Very little. And less that required a sub. These "beat" reporters are in the pocket of the club because their sources are at the club. They are like embedded reporters in a war zone - compromised by definition.
Each to their own, but I get little to nothing from the likes of the Athletic. I bought World Soccer for 25 years - but even that died a slow death after Keir Radnedge - a proper journalist - gave up editorial control.
You'd get more insight on here.
