Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

Based on recent history you are right. To us older people top seven means we still have a long way to go. It also means the seasons ahead have become finite on a personal level. So we had better hurry up and win something.
It's based on more than recent history, though. It's also based on current finances and, looking ahead, potential for growth.

There are at least 7 teams, possibly 8, who are way ahead of us on both these measures and other teams whose current budgets are healthier than ours. Barring the odd Leicester or Forest having a cracking season, financial clout is the best predictor of league position. It has almost zero to do with how good we were for a few seasons 40 years ago.

Any Blackburn fans who said they weren't satisfied with finishing 7th in the Prem and not winning a trophy because they were the best British team for a year in the 90s and were a good team in the 50s would rightly be derided as lunatics.

We have a rich history, but it's history and it isn't a reasonable standard by which to judge what this team should be capable of. I regret it as much as you that we lost our way in the 90s, but regret doesn't alter the truth.

Yes it is, because otherwise you’re accepting mediocrity.

You’re spot on about the finances but it’s Kenwright thinking to say we shouldn’t be trying to aim for the absolute top.

Nil Satis Nisi Optimum used to mean something. It still should.

Gallagher?

I said maybe.

….my daughter has travelled down to Cardiff this morning but probably not for this thread, Matey;

If you’re an Everton fan, and you’ve paid attention over the last few years, and you don’t think Gallagher is good enough to improve our midfield, then you’re a fool.
Must admit I’ve only seen him play a few times, but never noticed much to rave about.

That’s not saying much, obvs.

Anyway, they apparently bought him only a year ago for €42m, and are now looking to offload after he failed to make his mark there - but not for less than €50m.

Who do they think they are, Liverpool?

There is also no way in a million years that he`s coming here.
Also true. The bizarre attitude of some Evertonians just annoys me.

They seem unable to accept that we’ve been so terrible for the last few years that even a (in the grand scheme of things) middle of the road player like Gallagher would be a wonderful upgrade.

Unless we’re signing somebody truly top tier (which we won’t) or some young, progressive, relative unknown who they can feel smug about knowing about, then they don’t want to know. Idiotic. Progress come in steps and Gallagher - in the unlikely event he signed - is a good step right now.

I know pal...am only joking.

The deal itself doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Am comfortable with it because it will benefit both of us.

If a mate asked you to buy a car for him as it would benefit both of you, would you believe him?

We buy him and that affects our PSR for 1-2 years and there’s no reason to believe Roma won’t just pay us back what we pay for him.

If Roma can’t afford him they shouldn’t buy him.
