Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

Yes, that would be bad luck. Playing Michael Keane is bad planning. Critical difference.
So in your scenario it would be bad luck too to get injuries to Tarks/Branthwaite/JOB. It's not bad planning either. It's sensible. Sign Keane for a year deal to be a if the absolute worst happens choice while we address positions in the squad first that we don't have an out and out first team quality player in. CB is very low down on the list of positions to fix and despite us having money this summer due to the new ownership, we don't have an unlimited budget.

I'm honestly shocked by the number of people who can't or won't see this. Not only is he a walking disaster waiting to happen but he makes everyone playing around him a bag of nerves.
People just understand the perspective of the club, the squad we currently have and the fact that we don't have an unlimited budget.

We need a RB, LB, CM, ST, RW all before we think about replacing Michael Keane as a 4th choice CB.

Did okay at Newcastle on the last day though, to be fair, and I tend to be really critical of him myself. No one expected us to keep a clean sheet that day when he came in cold, let alone win...

If we don't sign a half-decent RB, that has nothing to do with Keane. If we don't sign a starting RB, this summer will be a failure.

I understand he played there to get the best 11 on the pitch, but O'Brien should never be playing RB unless it's at the end of a match to close out a game. He's a CB, and given the way he played there, I'm not sure Tarkowski is getting his job back.
It's everything to do with Moyes though. Branthwaite ended the season with an injury, who knows how that'll go in pre-season.

On first glance I hate the Keane news, but then I was advocating a new deal for DCL based on the fact that Moyes might be able to squeeze more out of a chronically underperforming player and save us a few bob on transfer fees so I suppose I’d be a hypocrite not to give it a go and see how it pans out.

So you've just used a different way of saying 4th choice to try and get across your narrative. If we sign a RB then we will be fine as JOB can slot in. There are far more concerns in the squad than Michael Keane as a 4th choice CB.

4th choice is what Chermiti was last season for one striking position. DCL Beto Broja Chermiti. So you only play if the first three players aren’t available.

He’d be 4th choice if there were was one CB position in the team. There isn’t there’s two. So if we have an injury in the RCB position OBrien steps in, if we have one more injury then Keane is in the first team. That’s not being 4th choice.

A broken clock shows the right time twice in 24 hours. The fact that nobody has come in for him even after his games at Fulham and Newcastle speaks volumes.

We will have to agree to disagree.

He’s the 4th choice CB. We get that we play 2 central defenders. We have 4, he’s the 4th choice.

This is not rocket science.

It's fairly straightforward. If we have four centre forwards but only play one, three forwards would have to be injured or suspended to play our fourth choice CF. However, because we play two centre halves, only two of them would have to be unavailable for us to have to play our fourth choice CB. They're both technically fourth choice, but the CB is far more likely to play.

TL : DR - Don't re-sign Keane as it's very likely he'll play and he's rubbish.

So you've just called them the fourth choice CB too. Cheers.

When there is no pressure (16 points clear of relegation) he can be ok.

Bring him on in the same match and we need to win to avoid relegation, and we get relegated.

If the first team lineup reads Tarkwoski and Branthwaite in the middle and O’Brien at RB, and we get an injury at CB, who comes off the bench? Keane.

So call it whatever you want, but people implying that he’s not going be playing much because he’s 4th choice are completely incorrect. He will be playing, often, and he’s nowhere near good enough to be playing PL football. This is not rocket science.
