5 things to fix the British economy

Indeed.

We're not quite there yet, but give it 30/40 years, there will be little need for schools or teachers. AI, delivered at home, will be the best teacher. It will save the government a fortune.

Much of school is learning how to socialize with others, such as understanding both social norms and how to challenge them. And all this happens over and above learning facts and figures and critical thinking--all extremely valuable in themselves (e.g., evidence-based reasoning, historical cycles, deduction). Most folks have never thought about how much they learned during break-time/interval/recess/in the hallways/under the bleachers, etc., but that's because some of the life's most complex lessons are the one's we are least likely to perceive, but are most predisposed to absorb. These lessons are things like empathy, pity, social tolerance, differences between pro-social and anti-social behaviors, etc.

Home schooling, especially via AI will not work. It's not how we are wired up. We are social creatures, not "only-childs" in a room with a computer and a brother or sister taught to think similiarly because that's what the computer said. Kids need to get out in the social world early-on and try out what they've learned.

Society may indeed turn the way you predict and go the way of home-based AI education, but not because it is efficient, proper, or morally acceptable, but rather because some component of corporate capitalism merged with social media to convince more than enough unthinking parents that this is the new best thing.

Great post. I work in a library part time running social programmes for children/disadvantaged/elderly people. We get a lot of home schooled kids coming in as it’s the only social interaction they get all week.

Lots of people in the country here went down the home schooling route following Covid and some of the stuff they’re teaching their kids is terrifying (don’t get me started on the anti vax parents).

One little girl confided in me last week that she’s desperate to go to high school when she’s 12 just for the social aspect. She’s trying to persuade her parents to let her.

Baffles me how right wingers are so desperate to tear down all the public funded stuff they benefited from. It’s incredibly stupid and short sighted.

How do you fix an economy that is billions in debt? Just scrap money and let’s just start over again, have a French style revolution against the oligarchs and bankers and come up with something new. #guillotinethescum. 😂
You guys started it....I'm throwimg out solutions to save the Western World Now....not next week when you;ve had your bran flakes,,,now before it's too late,,,digging it?

Tax anyone that makes money of the people of the UK, regardless of their location.

Tax inherited wealth over 5m and tax it HARD

Kill all offshoring.

Make education more tailored to the student. People that aren't book smart can be learning a trade earlier than they are. A skilled plumber doesn't need a GCSE in a humanity.

Eat the rich.

I think this person probably sums up the problem with the economy and where we are .

I have absolutely no clue how to fix it. We need more money but we apparently the media tell us we can’t tax the super rich as it’ll be a disaster and they’ll abandon the country . The last few months have shown We can’t do anything to impact the elderly , even the wealthy ones . It seems Politically this government can’t can’t discuss welfare reform .The farmers are apparently the lifeblood of the country and were told shouldn’t have to pay inheritance tax , so we can’t deal with that loophole it seems . While the option of austerity has been shown to have a disastrous impact when imposed.

So all we need to do is resolve the NHS , pension and DWP issues , find more money for defence but not increase taxes on anything . All the while seeing that AI Is coming down the tracks and likely to decimate employment.

Unless we create a Time Machine I’m not sure what options are available.

Sort out the corruption with tax and levys.
I'd agree the basic tax level needs lifting, as does the next level.
But as always it'll get abused like the furlough payments.
No use piling money into the pot if it's not being used properly

Everything an 11 to 16 yr old needs to learn is on the internet.

It will encourage parents to take more responsibilty. (Home Schooling)

It will reduce anti social behaviour...
I think having a level of UBI which covers the income required for parents to pack in work might cause a few problems in the economy. And switching the entire nation to a shut-in internet only basis of learning isn't great for learning responsible social conduct.
