2024/25 Jordan Pickford

I don’t get this whole needs to play in Europe thing.
If we qualified for Europa league we’d be playing the likes of Roma, Lyon etc.
In the league we are in surely playing the likes of city, arsenal, them lot etc is a higher standard?
It’s not like playing in Europe would then elevate the standard of player we are playing against
To me it just seems like a favour to the 'big clubs' in insisting players are only good enough for England if they're playing in European competition, which clearly makes no sense if the Premier League is supposed to be the best league in the world, as you correctly state. I guess that must mean that no more United players will be selected for England for the World Cup.

In any case, for me it's just another reason not to bother with the national team when there are managers like that being paid obscene money, and players like Henderson continuing to represent the country.

Very strange by the manager to not play him to be honest.

What's he going to learn by playing Kyle Walker that we don't already know (that he's finished at this level)? Or Dean Henderson, does he need further confirmation that he's nowhere near Pickford's level or something? Ivan Toney, Curtis Jones, Jordan Henderson, Ezri Konsa, Reece James and probably Dan Burn should be absolutely nowhere near that squad.

Let's be honest though, the English players just aren't all that. Some of them produce flashes of magic for their domestic clubs, but hardly any of them are genuinely world class.

Anyway, I think Spain will once again start to rule world football in the coming years.
I think England are now on a downward trajectory player wise so people will look back and realise that Southgate blew England's moment to win something when the players were at the peak of their powers. Even the much vaunted Bellingham has dipped in form though he's young enough to find it again. The only England players at world class level and who's anywhere near their top form or peak is Saka and Rice so you can't see England being successful for the next world cup especially as it will be in the heat of North America. And finally I've never understood why Alexander Arnold never starts for England as he's clearly the best right back in the squad especially now Walker is past peak and playing Curtis Jones ahead of him against Andorra is gaslighting at peak levels

….for all his defensive frailties, Alexander-Arnold definitely deserves a place in the England side, he’s a magnificent passer and striker of a football. Also, I’d have Livramento in the squad as a RB option.

Be interesting what team Pickford would pick, knowing the players so well.

Tuchel is not a good fit. This kind of thinking is going to go back to clicks in the dressing room of just 3-4 rival teams.
Having made two finals with a left field choice of a domestic manager, I can’t see why we have had to go back to a big name foreign maanager, which bore us no success in the past.
Pickford for one is probably better for not having to play midweek games abroad in Europe in addition to the PL campaign and any international games.

Livramento should be ahead of James for sure but Tuchel clearly has a Chelsea bias going on

This is where I disagree so much with what Tuchel said. For years the media have talked about burn-out. Our players are simply too tired mentally and physically to compete fully in international tournaments. It was actually part kf the reason that a Christmas break was introduced. But now we have this absolute chump stating that he'd prefer not to pick you if you haven't played 60 games in the lead up to the tournament???

This is one thing, and one thing only. It is a favour to certain clubs, giving them more sway in transfer and contract negotiations.

It should be a simple formula for international selection. Are you good enough? Are you fit? Do you suit the teams playing style? Are you eligible to play? If yes to all them, you're in.

For good reason.

Why are you talking about persecution complex and nobody hates him if you havent even listened lol
Its not my gig at all to go down that road but Dixon and certain people in the media like durham are at it with him. Makes a talking point? Who knows. But last night was a classic example. Henderson lets the 2nd goal in through his legs. Not a single comment from Dixon. Pickford does the same and he'd have been sitting there knocking one out over how poor he is.
Its still there within some sections of the media but i think a lot of other non Everton fans are starting to realise Pickford is Englands best keeper and are not being swayed anymore by the hate that swarmed over social media about Pickford whenever he played for England.
Imo that game Finishes 1-1 with Pickford in goal. He's kept the national side in many games.

His pen saves v Italy in that final should've made him a national hero

You're right I was waiting for the criticism of the goalkeeping for the second goal but it didn't suit the predetermined narrative of the punditry

I'm not saying they need Ant & Dec in as manager, but managing at International level is so much different then club level

Tuchel (who i don't rate anyway), is a fitness & tactics to the enth degree manager. You almost need an Ancelotti style 'plug in and play', someone that can give basic instruction and read a game, but also adapt.

They get such little time with the players, and they all have a base fitness level anyway and spend a lot of time taking in instruction at club level, i do think it helps having a less 'intense' international side

I also noticed that during the game (I didn't watch any of the after match chat) that there was not one comment about Jones giving away possession for the third goal. All the talk was about taking forever to take the free kick and then the poor delivery of the free kick.
