2024/25 Seamus Coleman

It's genuinely sad to see him playing these days, he probably should have called it a day about 3 years ago nevermind having another year.
Its very rare to see him play these days. HE`s just another example of a player being allowed to stay on while not being able to get game time. We ask ourselves why we can`t get back to winning trophies and challenging for titles. I wonder do the teams that are lifting silverware have a player that doesn`t play much, just to have around because he`s a nice lad that fits into the group.

Jobs for the boys.

We all love Seamus, but a playing contract for next season is an utter joke. Yes you can argue he deserves to play at the new ground, but we cannot be that sentimental when we're in the middle cutting wages to enable us to move forwards and improve the squad. I don't know why he isn't doing the honourable thing and retiring gracefully, but he obviously won't because it would have been announced before the end of the season. Definitely give him a coaching role if he wants one.

Even with this thing we do of giving ex players a coaching role when they hang up their boots is something that needs changing. I`m all for the club helping ex players get started and get their badges, but I`d like to see a set up where they can go and start coaching at a lower level and move their way up rather than get their badges and be handed a role at a PL club. There`s no end of clubs that would be happy to have a coach with such a lot of top level experience come in and work with them.

No, thats just more sentimental kenwrightism.
If he wants to be a Coach, let him go and learn his trade and if he's any good he could maybe be considered if there was a vacancy he was qualified for.

Exactly the way things should be. In what other profession do people start at the top level of their chosen job. I know that there are some players ready to step in at a high level in the coaching game, but they have been working towards a coaching career well before they hang up their boots. We need to step away from from having players move into our coaching roles, with the first team, U21s or academy sides. Unsworth and Ferguson are prime examples as when they left us they didn`t exactly advance their coaching careers. Not sure where Unsworth is but Ferguson seems to have given up the game completely. There`s also a few examples of lads that never made the first team here that are making their way as a coach or manager, Schumaker being one I can think off the top of my head.

….they tend to have much better teams, don’t think it’s anything to do with not having a Seamus Coleman type behind the scenes.

Funilly enough City have just let Scott Carson go, who was there for the last few years for that reason alone it seems.

However I take your point and we're in no position to be offering wages to a player who doesn't play.

Pay as you play deal or a grand a week is all he’s worth from a footballing point of view at this point
The coaches and scouts get more than that, so if he's expected to make himself available to play he'll get far more
I'd prefer him to jump into a coaching role now and free up the squad space but when he did play last season albeit limited he didn't let anyone down

I'm not sure this is the compliment he thinks it is. Being the architect of the club's culture over the last ten years isn't a great achievement.

It's a culture that's celebrated mediocrity and sentimentality, home to the old boys club and mercenaries on and off the pitch.

I'm not blaming Seamus solely. He was a cracking player at his peak and his ability to influence what's gone off the pitch is limited.

But the culture of being nice, not standing up for ourselves has been a reflection of his leadership on it.

I do wonder what his fitness level is and is Moyes thinking we need cover at RB.
I think back to the end of the previous season and loads of Blues I knew wanted to rid of Ashley Young. I thought he would be worth keeping just for his influence in the dressing room and his experience. It turns out he had some very important games for us and his experience was vital numerous times.
Having said that I'm surprised we are keeping Seamus as a player, but maybe he might play in some vital roles, like Young did.
