2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Maybe we should stop comparing “Dom” to Haaland and start comparing him to his goalscoring peers. Like Michael Keane and Fabian Schar.
When you are chucking a defender up top
It's usually alongside the forward who is creating the space for him.

If you have to play a defender as a striker these days the squad has no quality in its depth.

Can't remember who it was against towards end of season (Maybe Newcastle) Dom got played through on goals one on one with the keeper and at no stage did I think he would score. Pretty much made my mind up about the lad there and then. I like him but probably best to move on. Scored one of our most important goals ever. No ill feelings towards the lad, felt he would be much further on in his career.

Head was turned when he got with an influencer. Get rid.

Can he be taught how to influence a game?

That's it, I like the lad but never feel confident when he's through on goal

Was always injured, coming back from injury, getting match sharpness, or in a goalless rut.

Had so many spells where the manager of the time would say “sometimes you just need one to go in off your backside and the goals will start flowing” but they never did. And when he did nearly score one those scruffy goals it hit Harrison on the way in and he got the credit.

We just need competent finishers who don’t need to score with their bum every 3 months to get their confidence back. Just kicking/heading it in should be possible.

We need players who can score off their backside every game too.

Kevin Campbell was great at it, It's all about positioning and taking a chance on a rebound/deflection something we have not done for years.

Nah, this argument just doesn't wash for me afraid, I've easily seen more than 2 strikers who have outperformed him, or at least matched him, during that time period, they just didn't stick around as long. I'll stick my neck on the line and name Saha, Yakubu, Campbell, Rooney, Johnson, Beardsley, Cottee and Radzinski as all outperforming or matching him. Like I said, sticking my neck on the line there, as there's 1 or 2 names where I can't remember their exact goal record, so feel free to disagree with any.

Some may be better, most are but only 2 scored more goals.

Most played in better teams too to be fair.
