2024/25 Michael Vincent Keane

Why would we be buying a 4th choice as a replacement? Shouldn't we buy someone good and the other three have to fight for the remaining spot?
That's crazy talk! Buy better players that what we have now? How's that going to improve us?

Joking apart, you are totally right.

For a youngster breaking into any first team is one of the hardest positions to nail down. You really have to learn your craft and any mistakes are cruelly exposed.
Not really a position where you can just come in and make your mark straight away either. Takes time to build an understanding with defensive partners etc. A young striker gets a chance and gets on the end of a few good balls and he is in the team all of a sudden.

…..you shouldn’t equate one with the other, Joey. Young players will come through if they’re good enough, not simply because they’re young. Sadly, we’ve not brought an Academy CB through for a long time, it’s increasingly difficult to do. Richard Dunne was exceptional, I watched him lots, Harvey really rated him.

Lewis Gibson and Holgate were purchased just like Branthwaite and Stones. McNaught, Labone, Hurst, Kenyon (2 from Blackpool) played because they were outstanding.

It’s not easy finding them.
Its easy letting them go on loan without even trying them out ? Are you saying we in the past we could find the above as youth players & Labone was a local lad cost us nothing - he starred when the reserves used to play the first team pre season - that should be fetched back by the way - as Labby marked a certain Dave Hickson at his peak out of the game -
Dave came in & told the management to get him in the team as he struggled to get a kick of the ball - the rest were youth players purchased at a very low price & 99% made the grade..

….you can’t use PL games for trialing every youngster we have. Generally, our youngsters are sent out to put them in the shop window because the manager isn’t going to use them.

The conveyor belt of talent isn’t like it was for reasons we’ve discussed at length, it’s getting more difficult to find talent, indeed so many youngsters are coming from abroad.

It might help you if you tune into the youth team thread, there are some posters whose opinions are worth reading. You’ll find out the number of youngsters being suggested as being ready for a step up are very few and far between.

I do, but any good recommendations are either sold our left back Robertson was sold for just 1 million & then Fulham paid 11 million for him a top USA international e.g. he never even made our first team to look at him !
He would walk into our team now .... Harrison Armstrong impressive cup tie performance - sent on loan ?

My argument is at least have them on the bench to bring on in stages to develop them not a knee jerk lets loan them out or sell them - Lookman was another prime example of not getting a chance in stages ....
Brathwaite is special , but he got his belated chance & took it over Keane who was playing rubbish at the time !

Strange one this - he surely knows his game time will be limited. Perhaps he is thinking that with Tarks and JB now both having dodgy hammies and likely to be late back to preseason, there is a chance to stake a claim... again.

The only consolation, is that with everyone fit he is fourth choice and we need so many new players that we probably cant afford to splash the cash on another CB just to be backup. Shame there isn't a promising U21 or Academy player knocking on the door - it would be perfect timing for them.

Is most likely down to a few things money and the contract length, would be happy if a deal could be done with us also planning for the future at cb. So we can build up another player like jb who can go out play games and come back to fight into the team

4th choice for CB. It's not the worst outcome.
