Everton Optimism 2025-2026

I think my answer to the final question on the latest Everton survey sums up my current mood

Until we know what the squad is going to look like at the start of the season it's impossible to say what next season will bring. As it stands we haven't got enough players to fill the bench. We'll know a lot more in about six weeks time.

We are undoubtedly in a better position than we have been in years - but that's akin to saying we're doing ok now we are in the prison cell rather than the electric chair. We are miles away from where we need to be - as a baseline.

I am cautiously optimistic that these new owners will improve things significantly, but there's a risk of delusion until they start buying proper players and show real ambition. Alcaraz is a nice start, but they're going to need to do a lot more than that before I think we're anything other than Roma's back-up. I suspect they'll have big plans for us, but we need to start seeing them soon, because now we are safe we have no time to waste. I'm more optimistic than I have been for five years, but not really all that excited by what they've done so far: it's all been quietly competent and no more. I'm grateful for that - but we're only back on an even keel now thanks to that. Time to move forward with purpose.
