Transfer Rumour Liam Delap

He'll join a long list of promising young players who are in the massive senior playing squad but hardly actually play football at Chelsea. Even if they don't sign more strikers (which they more than likely will) he's going to be second or third choice at best. I'm seeing a few substitute appearances and some league cup starts and a loan move away in 18 months time. Good luck with that Liam 😣

So, more money for less work.

Sounds like a bloody nightmare poor chap.

If he signed for us the every other fanbase in the country would be calling him an idiot.

Chelsea can offer Champions League football a higher salary than what we are offering.

People take them blue tinted glasses off, we will be seen as a struggling club in the eyes of everyone.

In Liam's lifetime we have had a FA cup final appearence which we also lost to Chelsea.

We are a smalltime club in the eyes of him.
However not getting game time at his age will be massively detrimental to his career.

Understand the current perceptions of the 2 clubs but what does that matter when you will play every game at one and likely not much the other.

Exactly…. Best of luck to him if watching the Chelsea model in the last decade appeals to him.

Money is certainly important, but I don’t think it’s money we can’t compete with , it’s our lack of success.
38 years since we were Champions
30 years since our last trophy
Our prestige has eroded .
Players don’t want to look back and realise their biggest sporting achievements were not being relegated.
We are a hard sell at the moment.

Don't buy that at all when the sell isn't looking back in the past but looking forward and getting players who want to help that.

If they don't and would rather warm the bench elsewhere. That's fine by me.

Most fans I've read are calling him an idiot for signing for Chelsea.

Yes Chelsea are a bigger draw than us but let's have it right...players like Caciedo and Lavia turned down the RS in the past and both could have premier league winners medals by now.

It's not the "who's biggest" but what's best for a career just starting out where playing every week makes better footballers.

Good luck to him. But let's not start crying over him or belittling our new project as a club.

Yes but even if he fails at Chelsea he will have a massive bank balance and a few clubs prepared to still take a chance on him.

If he fails at us he will have a smaller bank balance and less clubs prepared to take a chance on him.

That's true - but he's far more likely to fail at Chelsea. And surely a quality player who "backs himself" wouldn't entertain the idea of failing at Everton. It's not like his chances at failing at either club are the same.

Nah, he's made his choice. If he succeeds, he'll be a superstar. If he doesn't, well, he's not the brightest tool in the shed.

Agree, yes football pays crazy wages...but he could get a career ending injury at any moment

Maybe he won't play much at chelsea but also this might be the only chance he gets to play champs league..I totally get why he has signed for chelsea..if he had signed for utd then criticism would be fair

The delusion in some blues at times is mental.

Chelsea is such a bigger and better move than us, right now. All day long.

WE see US as a better move bevcuase we aer biased, we have nothing to offer other than maybe to start more games, thats it, and thats not even certain.
Are people criticising him for moving to Chelsea over us, or just criticising his specific choice?

We were never seriously in this "race". Chelsea are far more attractive than us - as indeed are Newcastle and even Man United for all their decline. I would have thought the smart move for Delap was Newcastle.

If I was Delap, I'd go to Chelsea. The thing they were mainly missing was a proper number 9. If they can get a full season of consistency they can win the league next season. They're in the Champions League and realistically are in with a chance in 4 trophies, which is 4 more than us. Why would you not want to be part of that?

Chelsea are clearly far better. But it’s a madhouse. You could be in the team or you could be frozen out the first team squad at the drop of a hat.
The fans won’t give two hoots about you either.

Young players seem to want to move to clubs that are playing CL football rather than move to clubs that they would play regular week in week out for a season or two before making the step up. Far more players make that move and have their careers stall when they lose form and the likes of Chelsea throw 30 or 40 million on a replacement in the next transfer window, where as signing for a club like ourselves will give them the platform to show how good they are without the pressure of your replacement signing 6 months after you sign up.

They turned down Liverpool as Chelsea offered a better wage package.

Not a chance in hell we would have been offering a better wage deal than Chelsea.

What also makes players better is playing in a team with better players around him to create more chances for him.

The chances of him picking us ahead of Chelsea, Man United, Juve and Newcastle was less than 1%. It was akin to us bidding for Sutton back in the day.

He knows the manager so will be confident of being in the team alongside Palmer who he also knows. It could all go wrong because it's Chelsea, but these owners seem to be less inclined to sack the manager so it's a gamble worth taking.
