Wildlife in your Garden

I have a soft spot for magpies. Total horrors. Never used to see many growing up then the population exploded round my way.

….good point, never saw magpies in the 60s, mind you being brought up in Everton we were told that sparrows were baby pigeons. I remember the teacher telling us to bring a leaf in, no leaves by me so I had to go to Shaw St park to find one.

Two dead fish in my pond - I suspects a rat has got in the corner where the net came undone sealed the net back up - my fish look stressed out ....or wood pigeons are about been filling my pond up in the hot weather - the distance from the net to the pond has got closer so put 6 canes' tilting my net upwards - its sealed up tight now - hope it works ....

Just set a big rat trap with peanut butter & dark chocolate in the corner I think the rat may have been getting in - evidently they will keep returning ....

Only time we saw magpies was on the journey to Heysham each year for our annual (caravan) holiday. Nowadays they are about the most common bird in and around my garden. In isolation beautiful birds but can make a hell of a racket when they band together.

You not a fan of rat Joey?
Do you know - I can catch mice in my greenhouse etc - but rats particularly sewer rats - give me the shudders - came across two in a Stove greenhouse once & they were big & I ran away  -

I put one big trap out - may be some other creature but my fish are stressed out - something is killing them lost one a day so far big ones too ....

Because of the recent consecutive days of hot weather, your pond will attract all sorts. If it is only so deep, you could have picked up a heron that's stopping by like at a sushi bar. if you can pin a layer of chicken wire over the pond (no idea the size) then another layer about 2 inches above that slightly off camber then you'll keep the majority of everything out. There's a lot of urban foxes in the area, and when push comes to shove, they'll do almost anything to get to water.

How does a rat kill your fish Joey ?

They scavenge and very rarely kill other animals , if they attacked your fish they would have bite marks all over and chunks of flesh missing.
Don't get the Woodpigeon thing either tbh.

Do you live anywhere near a steam or river Joey ?

Otter and Mink will take. goldfish with glee and keep coming back.

Ulverston in Cumbria has a real problem with Otters raiding ponds at the mo.

Sounds mad, but it’s a possibility.

They may enter the pond & are good swimmers & can hold their breath underwater for 3 minutes at a time - the sewer rats are large in size as the plenty of food down there..they may just viciously attack my fish & sress kills fish - also Rat p@ss is lethal poisoning the water it is can affect humans seriously too- rats unlike mice love water -
My fish looked stressed out somethings not correct- no rat in my trap tonight & I will 3/4 empty my pond tomorrow & refill with fresh water it's completely netted off tonight !

Stress kills fish frogs rats etc will not directly kill the fish they will & can cause bad stress = in death !
