2024/25 Abdoulaye Doucoure

It’s correct though isn’t it? He cost over £20m and has left for nothing. Whether people like it or not, resale value matters to a club like us who make no money from other avenues.
To be honest, I got the wrong end of the stick, Resale value does matter - but it's not as simple as just cashing in when we could, He was probably the last player Dyche would’ve been willing to part with. We do need to rethink our approach to transfers, but with the way things are currently set up - especially with Moyes seemingly holding a lot of control - I can’t see us moving away from the 'Premier League experience' model we’ve stuck to for years under Moshiri.

I do look at the state West Ham are in and worry, oldest squad in the league and a lot of duds.

He couldn't be sold.

Having said that, that's why we shouldn't be buying 27-28 year olds with large fees. This is exactly how we find ourselves in this mess.

Arteta, Pienaar, Cahill, Lescott, had no PL experience. Alcaraz, Yobo, Tie, McBride, Donovan, McFadden, Valente, Fellaini, Coleman, Heitinga, Stracq, Jelavic, Naismith, Mirallas, Oviedo, Stones. All the same. Bit of a stretch really.

Another £20 million plus signing walking out the door with no fee.
Yep, Keane too which is another £30m and will take our players signed for over £20m and released at end of contract to over £270m in the past 5 years - disgraceful in every aspect from signing many of these in the first place, to having to loan them out because nobody would buy them, and finally having to release them and breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Keane £30m
Doucoure £25m
Gomes £20m
Mina £25m
Gbamin £30m
Allan £22m
Tosun £28m
Sigurdsson £40(!)m
Walcott £20m
Bolasie £25m
Can basically add Schneiderlin to that as we sold at a 90% loss (bought £20m, sold for £2m).

Imagine how quickly some of those clubs will have accepted our offers when they came in, likely unable to believe their luck. I also don't recall any kind of bidding war or competition you sign any of these players.

Footballs a lot different to it was 15 years ago. I think overall the recruitment at West Ham was poor, whether that was his fault or not I don’t know.

He leaves after delivering big goals and created good memories - many crucial and influential to the very life blood of the club, so will always be warmly remembered here as will his contribution.

Had his limits as a player, but was also very influential, often holding the balance of the team, rightly or wrongly, you couldn't argue with his influence on results as a club and set fans - you can only be grateful for that.

While the above is true - if you want to recover and evolve, you have to move on from players like Doucoure and particularly the value proposition.

I suspect it may be more difficult then most assume and there is a reason hes been a comfort blanket for the majority of managers who have passed through during his career.

Anyway, best of luck to The Duke and thanks for all - great servant and will be remembered warmly.

Hopefully a thing of the past and in a few years the academy being in a better position and getting the odd one through who’s capable of playing and adds something to the side. We can hope 😂
