Gary Lineker resigns from the BBC -

"Their (The BBC) guidelines clearly state that flagship presenters must not share their own views on contentious political matters. Lineker helped them write those very guidelines"
Alongside his comments about they 'wanted rid of him last year', this casts a new possibility. He steps out in infamy, and sets himself up to sling comments at all and sundry when the rules are not applied to others just the same. He's already set to provide hosting on sky or whatever channels have the football now, and we've not seen this club world cup bullocks in the summer, who's on that gravy train?

re the sport and politics don't mix.

Lets not forget boris and co...

Small world huh.

Escaped a British institution to be able to express opinions without repression I expect. Good for him! And it shows up British free speech for what it is - a front.
We get this line in Canada too. The UK and Canada do not have Absolute Free Speech and never have. There are always restrictions, even in America the bastion of free speech you won't get away with everything carte blanche.

Free speech or expression also doesn't give you any right to maintain employment while you spout off whatever you want.

They are doing quite the stitch up on him though.

He reposted a video someone stitched a rat emoji on an Israeli spokesperson is what I've been able to find. Which in and of itself isn't great, but it's not like he's been mailing bacon to synagogues is it? I definitely feel its about cutting him off the wage bill.

Get the internet linking Lineker and antisemitism by publishing loads. Thought this lovely moving timeline of his controversies was also delightfully OTT.

Mate, you're throwing out anecdotal evidence and again this isn't between anyone but Gary Lineker and his employer.

If you're employed by anyone these days you can't be having any opinions anyone can link back to you or the employer through you. That's just become standard.

Once it hits the net and the association is made between you, whatever someone finds offensive, and your employer that's going to be a short conversation while they sack you.

Otherwise you get the other side of it like they got with Saville where because nothing was done they're accused of being an institution and organization riddled with covering up and protecting those people.

No "Free Speech" law is stopping you getting sacked if the employer thinks you've said something as public representative of their image that they don't agree with.

I do not have the time to covertly monitor whoever is exposing secrets this week. When my news and opinion pieces are being dictated to by committee thinking know-nothings, because of some temporary allegiance to their paymasters milk & honey, then simply, the system has failed.
This entire fiasco plays into the realm of farage and 'you can't say anything these days'. Lets go the whole hog; because I go to one church, I'm offended at the sight of all the rest. And the worshippers are even worse, they need to go as well.
How far does this go? Is the only person allowed an opinion, popular or not, some vagabond? Doesn't have a job so has nothing to lose.

The stasi operated on complete surveillance, grasses on grasses, what you read, how often you went to church, who your pals were, or weren't.

The politics of fear and reprisal.

Yup, but it’s deliberately engineered outrage to stifle opposition.

Do you seriously think the ex-Spurs striker Lineker hates Jews?

Or do you think he is against genocide, the deliberate starvation and targeting of civilians, and the bombing of Aid trucks?
