Ex players on the pitch Sunday:

….Ferguson can’t lace Rooney’s boots as either a footballer or an Evertonian.

Rooney was a special talent, he joined arguably the biggest club on the planet and one of the biggest sporting franchises in the world. I said at the time it was totally understandable and I was chuffed to see him go onto achieve what he did with United. It’s not surprising he comments on them given he was part of their success.
Ferguson won something with us, Rooney left to win things elsewhere. In terms of who has done more for Everton, it's illogical to argue for Rooney. I think Ferguson's "Mr Everton" persona is overblown but, as an FA cup winner for us and with years of service to the club, he certainly deserved to be there yesterday.

You enjoyed his success at Manchester United? I don't know if you are trolling or being serious but I shall respond in any event.

Where did I state that Ferguson was a better footballer than Rooney?

For his faults, Ferguson contributed more to the club in terms of the team winning a trophy and avoiding relegation at a key time.

The difference between Rooney and the likes of Jack Grealish and Declan Rice is that they stayed at Aston Villa and West Ham respectively for over 5 seasons (Grealish played 2 seasons in the Championship whilst Rice won a European trophy at West Ham) before being sold for £100+ million. They had paid their dues.

As an Everton fan I waited decades for a once in a generation player like Rooney yet he left the club at 18 years old. I'm a realist I didn't expect Rooney to stay at Everton until his mid twenties but certainly 4-5 full seasons then move on in his early twenties or even twenty! Maybe the club could have won a domestic cup during that time.

He signed the contract for Manchester United. It's his life, he had an amazing career and it worked out for him but to me that's him done with having a meaningful relationship with Everton at that point and it would work that way in most professional industries.

He's a Manchester United legend which I couldn't care less about.

He didn't achieve anything of note with the club and vice versa. No trophies, he didn't contribute to the team finishing in the top four (that happened the season after he left), avoiding relegation etc. He is irrelevant to the football club in my view aside from scoring a fantastic debut goal against Arsenal.

I think it would have been ok to have had a video with him spouting whatever he wanted to say but to have him interviewed on the pitch at Goodison Park...not for me given the above.

When Everton resigned him it was like someone welcoming back an ex partner who had cheated on them, put on 6 stone and had 4 kids with someone else.

I will keep it real as there were some other players present like Beckford (sure he's a good lad but not exactly an Everton legend) which left me thinking why were they invited.

Just my view but hey, maybe I'm a dinosaur these days

He also came back to us when he was broken down for his own ego and that nostalgic snake oil salesman that used to run this club lapped it up. He might be an Evertonian but his career came before the club (I don't blame him for that, btw) so some posters holding him up as some sort of superbloo are kidding themselves.

Still scored more than most of our strikers have in the last 10 years like.

Both of these can be true

I got an awful shock just looking at the "This Is Your Life" tribute videos there. I was wondering who the old Soviet from the 60s was so I replayed it and he said he was Andrei Kanchelskis.

I know we all age, but Arsene Wenger looks younger than him. I remember Andrei as a muscular young buck...

I don't feel quite so ancient myself, now...
Genuinely thought lobonvskyi was back from the dead to give us a shout out.

Hopefully he is dead happy and just living his life how he wants to, a superb footballer
