Wildlife in your Garden

I saw a song thrush in my garden yesterday, the first one I'd seen for a couple of years, used to see them daily when I was a kid.

Didn’t see any at all for years by us, but over the past couple of years I’ve noticed a steady increase in their numbers.

No idea at all at what’s changed for them.

I’ve also noticed that Mistle Thrushes and Starling numbers have massively dropped around us at the same time.

I've noticed a drop off in starlings partly due to UPVC soffits and guttering?

Wasn’t in my garden but as I turned to walk into my street normally Friday night a Badger was walking towards me…. When he saw me he turned around and ran in the opposite direction.

Knowing where you live, are there any woods nearby, as there`s no way they`re living on that mountain !

As they normally like soft earthy ground to build their setts in, quite often near to woods for added cover.

They`ll build their setts in the grounds of houses in rural areas, if the area is quiet, there`s cover and soft ground- I stayed in a cottage in Cumbria one time, where they had their set under a long hedge, that boarded the cottage front lawn and they`d come out onto the lawn every evening looking for worms to eat - which was the real icing on the cake of that particular holiday.

At the bottom of my street are a number of large fields, the badgers have been around here for years, always see them if I’m walking home late at night.

Not sure if it is connected but near me they demolished some high rise flats, after that the starling numbers seemed to go down quite markedly. Before that you could almost set your watch to them arriving in the back garden to feed and then move on to the next garden.
