2024/25 Ashley Young

If you are going to bring in a plethora of young talent - new to the club, i want them learning of the habits and standards of someone like Young. ;)

….Moyes clearly likes having him around the place, I think he spoke of walking in the changing room at half-time and Young was already giving the team a scalding after a poor first half.

I don't really have an issue with it.
It shouldn't and doesn't set the tone for the summer.

I think there will be frustration and impatience in the early part of the window. At that point they will be giving some extensions and looking to have that boxed off, but doing that and getting new signings in are different things.

Moyes has been upbeat about the summer, and so has Kinnear. It is the main, but first part of the rebuild though.

I've no issue with extending contracts on players if they can still do a job. Young's age is obviously a concern, but he's proven he's still able to come on and help close out games and his experience will benefit the whole team (particularly the younger players). Clearly he's not going to be in the starting 11, but fills out the squad. The summer rebuild does still need to be exactly that, a rebuild, so I'd expect us to bring in some quality but we cant replace half the squad without retaining some experience.

Well as long as both of him and Coleman aren't getting new deals I'm fine with Youngey getting a further 12 months to retain his experience within the squad. Going to be absolutely ridiculous if Seamus gets a new one though.

The only way this is a correct decision is if we dont have the cash to bring in a couple of new players to slot in at LB and RB.

That's the concening thing about it.

We'll probably get a new RB in but we really need another LB and keeping Young on suggests we'll continue to be short handed at FB.

If his involvement stays largely the same (a few cameos off the bench and the occasional start like last week since Moyes has come back) then I don't really have a problem with it.

In terms of wages I imagine it won't be crazy, as he'd be almost more 'eager' one to try to prolong his career in the top flight, so more open to a reduced package.

Yeah I'd agree with that. I have no issue with the extension itself, but it does concern me that it means he's still going to be seen as the cover in those positions and that's not ideal. I was hoping someone like Walker Peters could be brought in to take over that role and we'd look for a really good right back to be first choice but I can't see that happening now.

….he’s played really well when called upon this season. Despite the medals, despite the age he still plays like the game matters.
He was atrocious last season though. Based off this season, I can see the reasoning behind keeping him and using him for 10 mins here and there. But at any normal club he would have been punted far away last summer.

The only way no new RB emerges is if O'Brien is now the RB and Tarkowski is 100% (which cant be guaranteed).

How we approach that RB situation now will be a massive indication as to how much cash will be spent this summer.

IMO we wont see anywhere near as much as a lot of people assume.

I think it’s more likely we bring in a RB/LB (maybe both 2nd choices who could develop into 1st choices rather than signing automatic first choices as Myko and JOB are fine there currently). Young then acts as the 3rd choice cover for both sides. Useful player for when inevitable injury crisis happens and JOB has to move centrally so Young is then 2nd choice etc

Think we will spend quite a bit and more than you think, and I also disagree about the RB spot, don’t think it will indicate anything. Maybe we get a free transfer of a loan and spend all our money on the top end of the pitch
