2024/25 Seamus Coleman

My main concern with Seamus retiring is on whom will the curse of ‘play for Ireland, get injured, recover back at Everton, play for Ireland, get injured, recover at Everton, play for Ireland…’ now fall?

Jake, I suppose.

This feller's immense.

Reporter: “Obviously very different than Tony Hibbert had gone before you, he was a great stalwart of the club, he was obviously memorable for never scoring a goal, you kind of revolutionised that position, but it was part of a growing trend within the game, the way that full backs were changing and evolving in that respect.”

Coleman replied: “Yeah, listen, I’ll speak about Tony for a second, because Tony Hibbert was incredible, incredible with me, an incredible defender, tough as anything, and he could deliver a cross, and he, like, I looked up to these lads when I came over, like I took as much as I could from them, Tony Hibbert, Phil Neville, Leighton Baines, I just looked at them and just wanted to get to their level, wanted to get as good as I could.”

One thing I love about the man is that he knows when it's time. He could have gotten a one year extension and be the one to lead us out at Bramley Moore but like he always does, he puts Everton first and that is brilliant.
Whatever happens hope still with the team in some position, would like him to be a player/coach next season. As a squad option lower money just to be there to see the team push on with his leadership

I think its going to be interesting to see what the club do mate. I was very dubious about him getting g anew deal last summer, but gave the club the benefit of the doubt.

Taking it being Seamus Coleman out of it. Based on games played, age, fitness would another player get a new contract................................

But it is Seamus Coleman, its going to be a test of sentimentality vs objectivity in decision making.
If we're still bringing sentiment into it, we'd better get ready for another relegation battle then.

What's all this retirement blah blah? I refuse to believe Coleman will not be the club captain to bring the Blues out for the first match at Bramley Moore. He might retire at halftime but who else leads the Blues out on the maiden game than 60 Grand?

And yes, I know it is currently named Everton Stadium but that is so milquetoast. Bramley Moore has flavor.

Should have been binned years ago.
When he was out with his leg brake it was the perfect time for us to go out and put a new RB at the top of our transfer target list. With such a bad injury meaning he missed nearly a full season, it was not a given that he would make it back to PL level quality. As it happened he came back and we had a couple more seasons from him before injuries started to keep him out for spells here and there.

But the way we were being run we just grab a free agent for 12 months and presume we could keep Seamus turning out for another decade. We wonder why we can`t get near the top end of the PL or win a cup, its because we hang on to players far too long beyond when they start to decline, and thats the fault of how our club has chosen to do things and is not the fault of a player who wants to play at the highest level for as long as they can.

Hibbert, Neville and Baines still looking for their phones and watches.
