Ellipses.

Should be used to indicate something left unsaid, or to represent a pause. Can also be used to demonstrate that a direct quote has been amended.

Arl fellas using them at the end of every single post are simply showing their ignorance of grammar.

I am an overuser adn an unapolagetic misspeller...
1. Omission of Words in Quotations:

  • Purpose:
When you quote someone but don't want to include every word, you can use an ellipsis to indicate the omitted text.

  • Placement:
Enclose the ellipsis with spaces on either side: "The quick brown ... jumped over the lazy dog."

  • Ending Punctuation:
If you omit words at the end of a sentence, use a period followed by the ellipsis: "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. ...". If you omit the end of a quoted sentence, use a period before the ellipsis: "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog...".

  • Four Dots:
If you omit a full sentence or more within a quotation, use four dots ( . . . .).

  • Example:
According to the Chicago Manual of Style, "The quick brown ... jumped over the lazy dog."
2. Pauses and Hesitations:
  • Purpose: In dialogue or narrative, ellipses can suggest a pause, hesitation, or a trailing off of thought.
  • Placement: Enclose the ellipsis with spaces on either side: "I... I don't know."
  • Example: "She looked at me and said, 'Lots of people think they can hunt werewolves. When they finally find one ...' She never finished that sentence, but she didn't need to."
3. Incomplete Thoughts:
  • Purpose: Ellipses can indicate a thought that is unfinished or left unsaid.

  • Placement: Enclose the ellipsis with spaces on either side: "If only... it had been different."

  • Example: "The old huntress looked at me and said, 'Lots of people think they can hunt werewolves. When they finally find one ...' She never finished that sentence, but she didn't need to,"
