I have to say I think thats revisionist history. From the year Howard came in on loan, until 2014 we were such a better defensive side, our best stretch in the PL by far. It was only his last two years we started shipping goals again. 2011-2014 was 40, 40, and 39. We had a champions league defensive record for those years.

His save percentage in those years was all where Pickfords is now, it was just his first 2-3 years were so good that the expectations were sky high. Id suggest he was elite for a couple of years, and then "merely" good after that, until poor at the end.
He was never elite. I do think he gets harshly treated at times, but not to that extent. He was a good solid keeper for most of his time here, and even at the end he wasn't the complete ghost that some people would have you believe, but he was never even really close to being elite.

He had a better team in front of him than Pickford, though. Tim was a perfectly serviceable Premier League keeper but he doesn't come close to some of our other keepers and I'm not sure he could ever have been described as "elite".
Well that's why he had better stats, but I think its a bit disingenuous to call him a "serviceable Premier League keeper" that anyone else could fill. There are 15 of those every season by definition. At some point there has to be a distinction between the guy whos not one of the top couple, but is 4th best, and the guy whos 15th.

Again, I think its far overdone that a player on here has to be either a legend, or poor. Its completely fine for a player to have done well, but not be one of the best. The reason we bought Howard is because his first season was elite, a whopping 175 saves, and only let in 29. We didn't have Jagielka, Distin, Coleman, or Baines yet.

It’s not revisionist history. Our defensive unit was very good around that time and we didn’t give up many chances. I had a season ticket around that time and vividly remember calling Howard out regularly for daft goals conceded. Go and look at some of the goals we conceded in 2012/13, they would have you laughing out loud.

Remember when he was nearly lobbed by Pelle in his own 6 yard box? Everyone going on about it being an amazing save but why is that even happening.

Excellent reflexes and athletic. But that's pretty much it, very average at everything else, at best.

Moyes never really challenged him either, solely by signing crappy goalkeepers as backups, same for Martinez.

He was great. Certainly not perfect. I think he gets picked on by fans because we’ve been spoiled by a series of amazing examples in the position.

So does Pickford at times. Because of Southall, I've noticed over the years, some blues think they're the world's foremost authority on keepers, even though probably half of them now never saw him in his pomp. Same with strikers and the same crap happens at other clubs if they had a great player in the past. City fans will be dumping on midfielders for decades because of De Bruyne/Silva.

He made it look spectacular by doing a really exaggerated flop backwards when he could’ve just taken a step back and caught it. Have you ever seen any other keeper make a save that looked anything like that before? There’s a reason for that.

Absolutely loved a porno dive. It’s very American to exaggerate which explains a lot.

If he was that good Alex Ferguson would never have sold him to us - at first a very competent keeper - towards the end a starfish of a keeper glued to his line .....
Ferguson sold kanchelskis to Everton - was he crap?

Not disagreeing with your opinion but Ferguson sold a few good players over the years

Kanchelskis wanted away & he had personal problems a great player, but with his personal problems never stayed that long with us either!
Tim was a sound keeper but we should never have prolonged his contract as he became a liability as he got older sad but true imo !
