2024/25 David Moyes

Let’s not equate the two. If you finished 2nd and won the cup then you would be in the Cup winners Cup. (Ahead of the UEFA Cup)

The conference league is for teams that finish 7th - and any Prem team should actually win that tournament fairly comfortably tbh.
Yeah, but it was clearly the weakest. Often the league and cup winners were the same and you’d end up with only a few “good” teams in the tournament. Arsenal did well to win it, but it was quite an easy path to the final.

The conference league is much more like the old Inter Toto cup.

I’m not sure demeaning the Cup winners Cup on an Everton forum is sensible.

I would, and clearly you would, but I'm not convinced that that's a majority viewpoint. Look at any match thread on our league cup games. There's loads of people talking about resting this player, and resting that player. It was the same back in the days when we qualified for European football. I find it bizarre how lightly some posters take our cup campaigns, particularly the league cup, a trophy we've never won and the easiest domestic trophy to win.

I reckon there would be plenty of posters suggesting resting players if we were playing in the Europa Conference League, so that we could focus on the league, so that we could qualify for Europe, so we could de-prioritise that competition, to focus on the league, to qualify for Europe......
If we didn't have 3 keepers and kids on the bench I could understand, but when it's a game against one of the promoted sides coming up (possibly) then hedging bets against last game survival and the circus with it seems justified.

It’s nothing to do with its historical standing, but how it became seen near the end:

“As European football evolved, the Cup Winners’ Cup faced stiff competition from other, more lucrative tournaments. Chief among these was the UEFA Champions League.

“The Champions League underwent significant reforms in the early 1990s, expanding its format to include not just league winners but also runners-up and, eventually, several top-ranked teams from stronger leagues. This change diluted the exclusivity of the Cup Winners’ Cup. Previously, fans saw domestic cup champions as unique contenders, but now, many of these same teams were qualifying for the Champions League instead.

“The UEFA Cup (now known as the Europa League) also played a role in overshadowing the Cup Winners’ Cup. With its broader range of participants, including league runners-up and other high-ranking teams, it offered greater variety and excitement. For fans and broadcasters, the Cup Winners’ Cup increasingly seemed like the third choice, unable to compete with the growing prestige and visibility of these two powerhouses“

The whole point of the Conference, for me, is to give more teams the chance to win a trophy. It’s rubbish that the same old names have locked up the other two pots. Mind you, looks like Chelsea, of all teams, will get it this year!

The Inter Toto was a Europa qualification tournament and you didn’t really “win” it, so it’s a bit different.

Moyes just suffers from an unfashionable tag. This happened with West Ham and either side of his appointment they occupy a similar league position to the one I remember them occupying. He’s put in charge of them and they are top 7/8. He will get us there (7/8) hopefully next year, and then his position can be reviewed. He may get us a little more balanced between resolute defending and attack and then we can pursue a more ambitious attack minded coach.

Let's have it right to some of the above posters. The Cup Winners Cup was the second biggest of the then three European trophies. That's why the European Super Cup was contested by the winners of that trophy and the European Cup, not the UEFA Cup.

We should've played Juventus in the Super Cup final back in 1985 but that's another story.

My feeling overall is that even post a ‘new manager bounce’ and notwithstanding a series of draws, the performances are better. Noticeable better.

The team also has more personality than before and I think that means the players are buying into what he wants from them.

My reservations are that he’s still got negative tendencies, for example his reluctance to play Ndiaye and Alcaraz at the same time and why he sees Doucoure and Harrison as safer options. This reluctance to ‘go for it’ is something he hasn’t shaken off since his 1st stint here and that will not be changing anytime soon.

My best guess is that he sees himself as getting Everton to where they belong and for Moyes, that’s top ten or higher.

He’ll look to get us regular top half and groom a Baines or Coleman to replace himself before moving upstairs..
