Anyone read Duncs book yet?

He was a bit part player in that cup run, who's contribution was an inconsequential 4th goal in a 5-0 rout of Norwich in the 5th Round.

There were plenty of hero's for the kids of the early to mid 90s to look to besides him. That 'only hero we had' myth needs nailing.

Nah, he was a weapon that influenced it for sure, remember him coming on early in the second half of the final and Utd didn't fancy it all and they didn't.

We have very different memories mate, Andrei was a star for a season, Amo was cult - but never played - Parky for a year or so - but again more cult.

Dunc was the young no 9, bullying PL defenses and making defenders look like children, led from the front and represented everything Evertonians wanted there club to be.

I think we all know he was the obvious hero for kids of that time - you can throw all the logic in the world at it, maybe its not even logical if you pull out stats but its emotive, like Arleta was an infinitely better player then Cahill - but i think if you asked most they would say Cahill was more of a hero.

Imho Duncan straddles the line between cult hero and club legend. The goals and trophies don't hit the requirements. The length of stay, how he speaks about Everton, the fact he has had a couple of spells as caretaker manager and most importantly he gave us hope after we all suffered through the aging Cottee, Angel and Barlow period, does.

As the big man has indicated himself, the regret is if he had applied himself properly and been able to keep fit, he could have easily got 150 goals here and taken any arguments away.

Everton heroes in 'the hero-less' era just before and during Ferguson's first spell:

Southall
Watson
Limpar
Kanchelskis
Beardsley
Amokachi

Kids in the late 70s and early 80s had:

Thomas
Latchford
Lyons
McKenzie

...none of whom won a trophy with us.

Cry me a river.

Nostalgic nonsense that mate.

He did about 50% of what's been attributed to him.

His 'legend' was built off field. Everyone knows that.

Reading your reply , Has somebody really listed amokachi as a hero ? I mean I went mental when he scored at Elland Road but that’d be some stretch .

Kanchelskis was special and as talented /dangerous as I’ve seen at goodison but we hardly had time to enjoy it , blink and it was done .

Nah no way mate, 95 itself was insane, helping us stay up, the Derby then going and winning a trophy - hero stuff. He was one of the best in the league in his first stint, he was unplayable just before he moved to Newcastle, i actually think people forget how good he was before that move, so good and so influential - he was unplayable.

Id accept he didn't make the same impact the second time around - but he still contributed hugely - Utd (how many times), CL etc. He achieved a lot at the club ultimately.

Was excellent against Newcastle in the 6th round. Absolutely bullied their backline.

Assist for Watson there, no?

In the desert of Everton cult figures in the 90’s, Duncan was a bit of ‘2 fingers up’ to certain teams with much better players.

I think that has to be recognised.

Plus he did make us a bit of cash moving to Newcastle and back, unlike other players who have run their contracts down or jumped ship when it suited for various financial reasons.

I don’t blame some for regarding him highly, but also others who have seen real football greats at Everton.
