Runcorn

The result didn`t surprise me in the slightest tbh.

The man in the street has had enough with the main stream political parties, as they feel they no longer represent them, which in turn leads to the likes of Reform gaining votes.

A lot of lads I drink with, the cabbies, the lads who work on the tools etc and a lot of the pensioners would all vote for Reform right now.

Talking to them means that sometimes you have to bite your tongue, but these are the people who are the traditional core Labour voters, who have become completely disillusioned with the current Labour party and are ripe for exploitation by the likes of Reform.

You multiply this across the country and it`s quite scary.
spot on.

This was always on the cards because of the absolute mess the Tories have left the country in. I said before Labour were voted in that people wouldn't give them time and so it appears to be proving the case.

You can't fix the last 14 years in one parliamentary term let alone 12 months.

I see people constantly calling them 'Liars' and a 'Disaster' on Social Media but I'm yet to have anyone prove what they have specifically lied about or been a disaster on.

Unfortunately, the people who helped keep the Tories in government for 14 years are all now turning to REFORM and Labour are losing voters as a result of unpopular decisions such as means testing the Winter Fuel Allowance for the wealthiest generation in history.

Immigration/ asylum is also a huge thing for a lot of people. All of whom seem to have selective amnesia and are blaming this on Labour. They have been convinced that the relatively tiny number of people risking their lives in small boats are representative of the overal Net Migration figure and believe this is the cause of all the problems in this country.

Let's get one thing straight, the issue with the asylum system and the housing in hotels and private accommodation is a manufactured crisis. The Tories underfunded and slowed down the asylum process on purpose. It wasn't a necessity to do this, it was a choice. They then used it as a political weapon to create anger and division. Classic Tory gaslighting; create chaos then blame the people at the bottom with nothing 🙄

This needs to be a wake up call to the other parties to start realising they are losing the trust of a considerable amount of people in this country.

The Runcorn result is likely to be the first of many such results if the Labour and Conservative party don't sort themselves out and offer a clear set of messages and policies that people understand and relate to and can see will benefit them and the country.
this is what im hoping for

This was always on the cards but not for the reasons you cite. Modern Western nation States were always going to run out of cheap money as the baby boomers retired in their millions. Add to that some, erm, cultural issues and you have a recipe for populism. If it's happening in most major Western nations it's not the fault of UK Tories, at least not primarily their fault.

The electorate are not blaming Labour specifically, they are blaming most mainstream political parties. It's just that Labour are the shower of s**t currently in charge. It's noteworthy that the Tories also fared disastrously last night.

It's that type of conclusion that ended up with Trump in the White House.
Well, it's largely true. Whilst level of education doesn't necessarily mean your are intelligent there is a clear link between the two. Statistics from the last general election demonstrate that REFORM voters were mostly less well educated with only 8% of their voters (by sample) having a degree or higher.

I mean, you only have to take a look at the majority of people who champion REFORM on social media to understand that they aren't particularly intelligent. Not that social media is particularly representative of the general population but it certainly impacts on how a section of society vote.

It’s not surprising that reform have won there. What’s going on in that town is similar to what’s going on in other parts of the country. People have had enough of it.

It’s a strange place is Runcorn. It’s a much bigger area than Widnes, but everything is spread out. They’ve literally got nothing there, jobs are hard to come by. You’ve literally got the Astmoor estate and up round Daresbury estate where jobs are. The shopping city is a mess, pretty much empty in there. The old town is over run with barbers, take aways and rubbish little shops. They’ve had no investment there for years, it’s all gone to Widnes(rightfully so, we are the far superior town haha) it’s kinda sad. Sadly, what’s going on in Runcorn is happening all over and nothing is changing nor will it change.

Reform will slowly take over if Labour and Tories don’t get there act together. Like people have said, it will take more than one term for Labour to sort the mess out the tories left it in. 12 months isn’t long enough, nor will they get the time to implement what they plan to do.

Get used to it, cos reform are gonna take over cos they appeal to the working class people who are fed up of been taken advantage of.

The issue with that is that REFORM are just failed Tories in disguise, how anyone thinks they represent them is beyond me. I assume it's because they make a lot noise about immigration and, like i said earlier, people have been convinved that all their problems are being caused by people who largely haven't got a pot to pee in 🤷‍♂️

It's far more than just immigration though.

In any European country it feels like public stuff is being sold off (or made into a public-private 'partnership') so that others can profit from it. In the meantime service levels drop through the floor and complaints are impossible to make (see rail, water, gas, electricity, social housing, education, health services). That's why I think Farage's stand against foreign ownership of utilities and for nationalisation is far more dangerous (even though it is just naked opportunism from a smug right-winger).

If Labour just said they were going to take water and rail back into public ownership because of the failure of privatisation, people would start believing they stood for something again, instead of conservative with a small 'c'.

There is huge wealth imbalance in this country and the general public are paying more for less.

Labour absolutely have to find a way to re-dress this imbalance and put more money in people's pockets, and they need to do this without (as best they can) just moving money from elsewhere at the same level in society. The squeeze on peoples finances is being felt at the middle and lower levels and not at the very top.

There's also the issue of the government spending money on things that, on the face of it, don't appear particularly worthwhile whilst taking it away from sections of society elsewhere.

It still stands that if you talk down to the electorate you lose them. No matter how often you print Reform in upper case.

BAD WOOLS.

*MP, not mayor.

The six-fingered horse-botherers in Lincoln elected Andrea Jenkyns, one of the thickest and most obnoxious politicians in Britain, to be their Mayor.

I didn't, but now I'm surrounded by those who did. Worse than that, the county council looks like it's gonna be 70-80% reform as well.

Boooooooo
