Places to avoid

Been in Barrow for 35 years and it’s always been an easy target for a “end of a cul de sac” jibe. It is what it is, a small Victorian shipyard town out on a limb and never pretended to be anything else. I have always felt ok here, made friends, settled and brought up two kids. Like many small towns, the town centre has suffered and there is a lot of full of boarded up shops. That's online shopping for you. All the major retailers have moved out but there are signs of better times ahead. Employment prospects are good and hopefully the town is on the up. Yes, There are social issues but no different to anywhere else.
To the person who is moving here for work, go for it, its a decent quality of life, schools good, housing affordable, Heart of the Lake District within 45mins if that’s your thing, but don't expect the cultural/ theatre/concert and choices you would get in major city or an affluent suburb in the South East. It can also get quite windy!
For your footy fix, get down to Holker Street and follow the Bluebirds!

I avoid Manchester like the plague.

Thoroughly detest the place , the city centre is a mess full of Gallagher wannabes and beggars , never ask for advice or directions in a Scouse accent.
The place has a very distinctive smell too , it's absolutely stinks.
From the many city's I've visited in my life it's rock bottom on the list .....Horrid place.

I went 3 weeks ago, stunned... there were no locals, literally anywhere.

Bar at 10pm at night... people on laptops, drinking coffee, everyone is from down South.

Hated the previous Manchester, pretty much exactly how you've described... but think I prefer it to the one I went to recently?

My mates live not far outside Dalton mate, in a little village called Gleaston.

I’ve been to Dalton quite a few times, bothduring the day and night and it’s a bit rough tbh and the now shut Lakeland Zoo bought a lot of business into the town
If you could afford it, I’d look at some of the villages near to Dalton- more exp
Yep Gleaston is a lovely place. Just needs a pub! By the way Charro- if you use Facebook, there is a group called “The beauty of Barrow In Furness” showcasing the best the area has to offer. Have a look and best of luck in your move.

I love it around there, Urswick, Baycliffe etc.

You`ve got the best of both worlds.

The Lakes on your doorstep, beautiful villages and countryside, but non of the problems that come with mass tourism.

In saying that, the house prices are still quite tasty though.

Over the years I`ve spent a lot of time in Manchester, via mates who moved there with work, through working there myself and I had quite a few girlfriends over the years from Manchester too.

It`s just like every city, in that you need to know where to go and until you know your way around, it helps having someone who`s into the same things as you to show you around.

There`s loads of wonderful old skool back street Victorian boozers in the city centre ( you need to know where they are though )

Then you`ve got the likes of Castlefields and the Gay Village around the canal and all the nightlife around them.

China Town has some great places to eat, as does the curry mile in Rusholme.

Then you`ve got the likes of Didsbury and Chorlton with all their trendy bars, pubs, places to eat and the uber posh Alderly Edge and around there, were the footy players live.

The bad parts of Manchester are worse than LIverpool though, I`ll give you that.

The likes of Hulme and a place you`ve probably never heard of called Bench Hill ( a lot of Shameless was filmed around there ) are not off third world.

Some great live venues for music and theatre too.

No doubt there are some nice places.

But each to their own suppose.

Greggs on a Sunday about 4 pm when they sell off big bags of stuff that was about to be launched into the bin. Like trying to get bog roll and pasta at Costco the week before lockdown.
