They get given squad numbers when they play in the EFL (Papa John's, Bristol street motors etc) trophy. Everton have never been great at keeping the website up to date so some have them correctly labelled, some don't. I wouldn't read anything...

Is there any significance to certain U21 players having squad numbers on the site? Is it an administrative thing, like those with numbers have them because they're in line (for the time being) to fill out the available squad for preseason friendlies?

Francis Okoronkwo is back from loan and is the only U21 forward listed with a squad number. I reckon he's closer to the first team than Sherif now, and could make the squad against Accrington Stanley.
