Well, I’m not sure how to break this to you mate, but sadly (for some, not others) our beautiful Queen Elizabeth the second has passed away. Not sure if you’ve heard or not.Been in Portugal for a while, have I missed much?
Is that you Wayne?Well, I’m not sure how to break this to you mate, but sadly (for some, not others) our beautiful Queen Elizabeth the second has passed away. Not sure if you’ve heard or not.
I can't tell if this is sarcasm or if you are deliberately describing the prime ministerI'm not a monarchist, but you have to face up to the reality that, if we didn't have a monarch, we would have some failed politician calling him/herself President instead. And of course he/she would have to be held in reverence by us plebs and kept in luxury for the time of his/her tenure, plus we would be expected to put up with Presidential elections every 4 or 5 years. At least with a monarchy the head of state is more or less self electing. And I don't think King Charles is any more or less embarrassing than Joe Biden, Macron, Trudeau or any of the others poncing around the world stage. Just my take on it. Anyway, cheese on toast.
Looks like they've updated a mural of Paddy Ashdown.
We'd finally need a written constitution in order to be a Republic. Are you seriously saying you trust the current tories to write that without any sort of shenanigans? The very same tories who wanted Prorogue parliament to get what they want? That doesn't follow at all.
Presidents can be ceremonial in nature with few if any powers. They're elected and they wouldn't cost billions.
I've noticed that argument of yours a lot recently. It's utterly bogus and a fig leaf to hide behind.
They didn't though did they? We'd finally need a written constitution in order to be a Republic. Are you seriously saying you trust the current tories to write that without any sort of shenanigans? The very same tories who wanted Prorogue parliament to get what they want?
Speaking of prorogue. Who was it everyone was asking to step in and stop them again?
I don't think I'm the one hiding behind fig leafs.
Yes, I was trying to figure out who it looked like. Oh dear. Best intentions, road to hell etc...Looks like they've updated a mural of Paddy Ashdown.
Would those be the legal experts the tories are trying hard to replace with ideologues who align with the direction of the party? They didn't though did they?
Royalty have been involved in right wing politics - the Queen intervened to have her old family friend Alex Douglas Hulme made PM during a Tory Party leadership election; she involved herself pushing for a smaller state, she intervene in the Scottish independence debate and before that she involved herself in the granting of devolution. They are not apolitical.
As for a written constitution, what's your arguement there? That would rule out any country anywhere from writing one because the party in power might skew it their way. And constitutions are an evolving process anyway, and in any case a constitution would be the result of politicians and legal experts agreeing on a set of words, codifying what we have now.
No, that fig leaf wont cover it.
