In the last 10 years

Moyes: Stones, Oviedo, Matty Kennedy

Martinez: Holgate, Tarashaj, Lisandro Rodriguez, Sam Byrne, Besic, Deulofeu, Galloway, Lukaku, Bassalou Sambu, David Henen, Connor Hunt, Matthew Foulds, James McCarthy, Christian Atsu

Koeman: Pickford, Vlasic, Lookman, Onyekeru, Sandro, DCL

Silva: Richarlison, Kean, Gbamin

Ancelotti: Godfrey Nkonkou

Benitez: Patterson, Mykolenko

Lampard: Vinagre, McNeil

I’ll admit there’s a lot of dross in there but this isn’t the hit list of a club that hasn’t targeted young talent. The effectiveness of our scouting department can be called into question but even with that, when you take the highlights from the last ten years out you get:

Stones, Lukaku, Pickford, DCL, Richarlison

All have been sold, or could be sold for mega fees over 40 million

Of the clubs you’ve named in Palace, Brighton, Leicester there’s not a load of names other than Kante and Mahrez that spring out that you could put in that bracket of absolute quality young players that they bought to the club. Maddison maybe fits in there but his biggest suitor is Newcastle and he can’t make the England squad. City won’t pay 50 mill for Cucurella today like they did for Stones, Bissouma went for 20 mill. Tielemans can’t get a buyer, they’re probably the only other ones that come to the top of my mind. The biggest difference maker at Leicester has been Vardy who was 25 when they got him.

Indeed there’s not many sides outside the top 6 selling multiple players for over 50 million as we have done in this period.

Of course we can buy better, of course we miss out on some good young players to other teams, but not every young player that Leicester Brentford Villa Palace pick up turn out to be a star for a long period, lots of them show flashes and then settle at a far lower level which is then forgotten about as we’re all obsessing over the next transfer we’ve missed out on.

Other teams are making recruitment mistakes just like we do which is why (along with the built in unfairness of the league) you don’t see any of them challenging consistently for the top 4.

The last four transfers we’ve paid any money for are: Gray Mykolenko Patterson McNeil - all pretty young

Feels like we’re looking for a problem at the club when there isn’t one.

The problem is recruitment of the right characters and the ability to keep them fit under a manager who is providing continuity.

Moise Kean is the perfect example of a player that looks great on paper but didn’t fit the club. Equally Gueye first time round was over 25 when we got him but was good for us and we sold him at a big profit.

The age of the players in and of itself is not the definitive indicator of how successful our recruitment will be. Some of them have been great but it takes a mix to make a competitive squad.
Koeman was here for the 2016 summer window. That's 16 players in 7 summer windows including this one. I don't really think you can look at that and say the strategy was to buy young.

Leicester haven't had to sell anyone yet but they have Tielemans, Ndidi, Barnes, Maddison, Fofana that all are solid players. White, Cucurella and Bissouma in the space of two summers is really impressive scouting and development. Palace are only in year three of basically stopping what we were doing and going the other way. They do have some players. Those teams all have strategies that are working and are currently better than us while having less money.

I agree we do need a mix and I've said before that if we were in a situation where we didn't have experience it would make sense to target that. But that isn't where we are. Here is the breakdown:

Under 23: Gordon, Mykolenko, McNeil, Patterson, Nkounkou (for now), Vinagre (assuming he is made permanent)

23-28: Pickford, Gray, DCL, Holgate, Godfrey, Gbamin, Iwobi, Mina, Dele, Davies

29+: Tarkowski, Keane, Coleman, Allan, Doucoure, Gomes, Townsend, Begovic, Rondon

The totals on that are 6, 10 and 9. Gueye would go into the oldest category. If you're really advocating for a mix than right now the target group is the younger side.

Also you can mess with those categories if you want, it doesn't really change the picture. Move the younger one up to 25 and you're only getting DCL, Davies, Holgate and Godfrey in. I personally don't view them as young players as they are no longer eligible for anything but senior football.

Its respect for someone else's opinion. Not the respect for the body they believe in.
Nope. No one needs to be respected for their beliefs if their beliefs mean marginalizing and refusing to show support for a group of people. We’re a community club and lgbt are part of that community. If you use your religious beliefs against other people l won’t just blindly support your beliefs. A racist is a racist and a homophobe is a homophobe I don’t care about your culture/religion - it’s not ok and he’s being rightly called out about it.

A world class cdm at his best. Very happy to sign him. Will probably be our best player like when he left us if he can still play at that level. He played a very high level of performance for psg last season
What is he at his worst, Allan?

I think you misunderstood the point I was replying to.

If we actually paid real money ala 10 mil for a 32 year old when we are hemorrhaging money then that sums up our godawful transfer team to a T. We shall see when the details actually come out.

Unlike some lads on here , I can't say that I have watched that many of his performances last year for PSG. However , what I have seen is still highly positive. Whether he will struggle slightly more with the increased tempo of the Premier League is a slight worry. He will still be easily our midfielder , and getting him back is a no brainer.
Although I would prefer us to be in a position to buy younger prospects , with sell on value , we aren't . If he costs £10 million ish and is the difference between survival or not , that's money bloody well spent.

And there is a lot of evidence to suggest that he can make a very positive difference to a team starving of good midfielders.

Since when was 32 past it in football terms. The talk is of players being young still at 25 and reserves are under 23. Is a peak for a player now only 26-30?

10m for a 32 year old is probably more than fair value. Especially one that stays fit and will improve our midfield massively. I'm pretty sure a few years ago players between 30 and 32/33 were going for larger fees than kids with potential. Who cares about sell on value when we need improvement now!

I understand what you are saying but you do realize that they don’t care what you think either, right.? And you are probably labeled in their minds as something too.

To be fair Gueye did not come out and say anything, he was also clearly given the option not to play by the PSG, hence why he did not play. If the club came out and said otherwise then fair enough.

In the end you don’t have to care what his beliefs are and he doesn’t have to care what your beliefs are. What do you want to do, force him to believe, put him in an internment camp until he does?
