I played in the Liverpool Business Houses Division 1, and when I moved to Norwich I got as high as Premier B. My son was a far better player than me, playing in Premier A, and playing National League a couple of times for Foxwood. He was a County player, and in his last year of Juniors he was ranked in the top 10 in England. He was good, but lacked the 'Street fighter, b*stard' attitude needed to take him higher.

I retired from playing around the age of 50, when the service changed from 5 per player to 2. A lot of people I knew walked away from the game at that point.

In terms of speed, table tennis reaction time to an opponent's shot/service is, I believe, the fastest required in any racquet sport (and before anyone piles in and says 'it's a table tennis bat', it's not, it's a table tennis racquet!).

In one match analyzed, table-tennis averaged 2.00 hits per second where as badminton averaged 1.72 hits per second. The badminton birdie travels faster but table-tennis requires a faster reaction time.

Used to play in the Southport and District League many years ago. We got promoted twice. Used to love my table tennis back in the day, it's a fun sport and I'd recommend it to anyone semi-fit looking for a new hobby.

Besides scoring and serving changes, the other main change is the size of the ball which changed about 20 years ago. It’s a lot more difficult to apply spin than it used to be. This has completely buggered up my defensive game as people just flat hit my attempted chops and pushes

Being a civil servant, I know the Civil Service Club was in Crosby with a dedicated table tennis room. Maybe that is the venue you are thinking?

It could be. It wasn’t the Civil Service Club at Thornton. It was on the right hand side of the main road as you head towards Crosby.

If your opponent hits a shot that doesn't touch your side of the table, but hits your bat beyond the area of the table, the point is now awarded to you, not them.

Correct. If you "volley " the ball over your side of the table it is still point to your opponent but beyond the table it's your point
