We just don't know what the financial landscape looks like, if it's as bleak as we've been warned then managers like Kovac won't go near us. It's probably the reason why we ended up with Benitez in the first place. If talks ever got off the ground with Galtier last summer then he'd have run back to France screaming after being told that he didn't even have £2m to spend. It's probably the reason why the talks with Espirito Santo broke down so quickly.

I think we are in a period of managed decline right now, so we absolutely need the new manager to put more faith in our young players in the hope that they can bridge the gap to the lack of any new major transfers. Lampard makes sense in this regard, he has direct and recent experience of working under constraints were he had to use the players he had at his disposal as well as looking to the long overlooked youth players at Chelsea as a way of refreshing his team. He obviously comes with major risks though and made some absolutely barking tactical decisions at Chelsea, such as his use of Kante and exiling players like Rudiger and Alonso. However, finishing fourth under the constraints he had was a great achievement and he'd have nowhere that kind of expectation attached to him now, he'd be given time to hone his craft.

Still, the job at hand is not as immediately perilous as it may appear. We are 6 points ahead of 18th placed Norwich, with two games in hand over them. So one thing we don't need is firefighter, gun for hire manager like Allardyce all over again. We have an opportunity now to look at growing from the ground up.

Exactly.

It would be mad to not have Ferguson in charge for at least a game with the crowd behind him and try and bring some positivity back.
the fear the board will have is that Ferguson fails to have the desired effect, they are forced to sack him, and the new man has even less time to turn things around.

the uncertainty of having no manager wont be great for a clearly fragile squad either

If Dunc fails to have the desired impact on Saturday then they wouldnt word it as "we sacked Dunc" it would simply be, "thanks for being caretaker, here is the new man"

There is no huge panic over a permanent appointment. We play on Saturday then have a week off over the international break before the Brentford game in the cup.

Let Dunc be the caretaker this weekend and make a firmer decision over the break.
we have a transfer window to finish and get a central midfielder and defender in. Doubt it will help if we have no manager. What i never understand is you see these things coming so why havent the board thought about this.
it should have been clear who they want, now it is a matter of approaching nr1 , 2 and 3 and pick the right one. Should be done this week

Good post. I share this sentiment.

good point about the transfer window, the new man must be allowed to bring some players in, at least give them his blessing.

I suppose now and knowing how lucky our past sacked and departed managers have been in securing new jobs , that Benetiz will now no doubt land on his feet. So it's next up for him the Spain head coach job. Or what about him leading Brazil. Or even England. He could give Longstaff a cap.

Martinez and Koeman managed bigger jobs. Although Koeman in the end showed his true form.
Even Silva is doing ok. So it's a top job next for Benetiz. Watch this space.
It's a funny old game. sometimes. Unless you support Everton.

A plan:
1. Appoint Ramon Planes, former director of football at Barcelona, as our DOF.
2. Appoint Marcelo Gallardo as manager - River Plate's most successful manager - "He is the most successful coach at the international level in club history to date, with seven international titles: two Copa Libertadores (2015 and 2018), the 2014 Copa Sudamericana, three Recopa Sudamericanas (2015, 2016, and 2019), and the 2015 Suruga Bank Championship. "
3. Let Planes appoint a coach from Barcelona youth academy to replace Unsworth so that we bring through youngsters with the qualities required at the top level of football.
4. Use Gallardo's knowledge of South American football to buy the best South Americans there are available. A lot cheaper than English players and much lower salaries.
5. Use Planes's knowledge of Spanish football to buy the best young Spanish footballers available, hopefully some from Barcelona who can't break into the first team - they are most definitely coached to have the qualities required at the top level.

We need a manager relatively sharpish. Doesn't need to be for Villa, Dunc in charge for that would be great. But we also need SOMEONE to help with the football DOF side of things. Someone said Luis Campos, sure. But I doubt we'd get him before we get a new manager in so it's all over the place.
