There's a price to pay.

There's limited cash available and we need to rely on cheaper new players and some intelligent recycling of money received on players sold for our higher cost purchases.

We need a big dollop of discipline above all else. Players playing for their team-mates and for the fans are the foundation for it. Something Benitez has stressed from day one.

As you know I'm far more critical of him than you, and in truth I dont think the lack of funds is as much of an excuse as others.

What I will say for him though, is he seems to be trying to make some decisions. They may not be perfect decisions, but 7/10 decisions are better than not doing anything.

In honesty, I dont think Brands and Walsh made enough decisions. I happen to think both probably know how to buy and sell better than Benitez, but they werent forceful enough. You also have the caveat, that a lot of the blame for this lies with the owner and chairman, but that is currently where we are.

Digne has been an excellent servant for us, and I really like Mina. Hes our best defender though he has a poor injury record. Eventually though, you have to start making decisions on players. We are not in a situation where we can just keep hold of players indefinitely if reasonable (or better) offers can be found. There has to be a pragmatism.

At some level, I think Benitez grasps that. Maybe it's what Moshiri likes in him, he can have an actual conversation, about the reality of what we face, not what we would want to face, or the nonsense he probably gets from Bill.

I say this as a big fan of Mina and Digne, but if he is bold enough to sell those 2, and bring in 3 or 4 younger players, alongside keeping the younger lads who have impressed, that will be a big plus for me. I know you dont rate that Patterson, but at 20 he looks ok for me, and I'm sure we can put him down to a decision you dont wholly agree with but you can at least understand the logic of, if he arrives. That we are trying to get younger players in, and move on older players before their value declines.

At times you need someone who can take such decisions.

Personally I feel we are weaker. But that is down to benitez as he sanctioned james and Bernard leaving despite the lack of squad depth. (And james after it was too late to bring anyone else in)

If you listen to the benitez fans, then logically we must surely be stronger because James was supposedly crap and Bernard did nothing.

Nkounkou and Kean weren't here last season either so neither here nor there.

The only other real departures were king (who may as well not have been here last season) and Walcott, who other than squad depth isn't a real miss.

So logically, this squad that finished 10th with 59 points laat season should surely finish higher with more points right? Aw we got rid of the crap waster in james, and brought in gray and townsend so we are better.

Who has said James was crap? I want to know who these people are.

Nkounkou was here last season too.

Sadly Townsend was a big upgrade on most of our other wingers, and Gray has definitely been an upgrade. That says a lot about Iwobi and others though.

We haven’t really played wingers for a long time.

Richarlison has often been on one flank acting as more of a wide forward. Then he’s nearly always been partnered by one of Siggurdson/Bernard/James cutting in off one of the wings. There’s been some run outs for Walcott and Iwobi at times but neither have provided any consistency.

This is the first season for a long time we’ve tried to put out pacey wingers on both flanks.

Would be good to see Gray Richarlison and a new Right winger behind DCL on a consistent basis. Pace and power in a consistent front four.

Remember what it takes? We haven't had any success in the modern game so how are we meant to remember what we haven't had?

By hiring a dinosaur of a manager whose tactics havent changed in 20 years?

We weren't at the bottom 6 months ago when we finished 10th on 59 points. The only difference is the manager.
It is disingenuous to ignore injuries. They have a massive effect. They did with Ancelotti post Christmas.

Take James, DCL, Siggy Mina, Gomes, Doucoure, Allan, Bernard and Coleman out of last years team and you get the post Christmas performances.

Take DCL, Gray, Townsend, James, Allan, Mina, Coleman, Doucoure, Allan, Gomes and Delph out of this years team and you get what you get.

I don’t understand what is so hard about this concept. If you have a massive amount of injuries to a very thin squad, the manager is not responsible. If you have a largely full team, the manager had to be responsible.

Getting shut of the DoF was enormous.

It means we have clarity on who;s doing the damage (or good work) on football decisions. I think benitez backs himself to get more right than wrong and doesn't mind unpopularity with players and fans.

We need an absolute bruiser, mentality-wise, to turn this club around 180 degrees.

Worst run since before half the forum were born. There were NO severe injuries, it's just you and the FSW thinks that.

He absolutely is not doing a good job. 5 points in the last possible 30. Worse record than Allardyce, Koeman, Silva and Martinez.

He didn't sack Brands, he was a sacrificial lamb. Managers always bring their own backroom staff in.

So... Enlighten me. How is he doing a "good job"?

You just aren't grasping the reality of the situation at the club and what we need to do. I think orthers are beginning to.
