Have seen that apparently most of the grid ignored those yellows. Could be a fair few penalties incoming

Bottas wasn't far up the road from Max and was still attacking the lap while Gasly was creeping along the start/finish straight. So Max would presumably still be ahead of him if the start dishing out penalties.

The report on the F1 website says Bottas and Sainz have also been called to the stewards, but they were only showing single yellows, where as Verstappen was double yellow.

I'm not exactly sure what triggers the difference tbh, but Verstappens comments about seeing Gasly and 'it wasn't a problem' again show the contempt he has for rules.

Should be a 3 place penalty for singles, 5 place for doubles.

Should be straightforward, but let's see if they can weasel out of it.

What is the crossover between a single and a double? I guess it's at the discretion of race control but I can't find any easy to follow reference to:

Single yellow
Double yellow
VSC
SC

I have found the F1 rules, but jeez.....

Single yellow means slow down, double yellow means be prepared to stop. The penalty for ignoring doubles is more severe as its more dangerous.

Yeah I get that......but where is it written in clear language what triggers each stage?

Or is it purely discretionary depending on the specific track/where on the track/is it race/is it qualifying etc.

You can see why some drivers make their own minds up about what to do.

Hmm yeah. Its an honest mistake but stewards are normally all over this sort of thing. Would be very surprised if no actiom was taken.. its not like the team didn't know Gasly was trundling along there and could have warned him

Could well be a 3 place pen

Basically this yeah. All the teams are informed on process/positioning each weekend.

Why Verstappen doesn't have a leg to stand on is because the stricken car was right in front of him, so he can't claim he didn't know anything was happening - he should have been actively looking for the flags.

He saw them and ignored them. If the stewards don't give him the five place penalty, it's more evidence as to what's happening behind the scenes to get the cash cow his maiden title. Because it should be automatic, like Hamilton's rear wing penalty.

That's what I was thinking, he's even said he saw the car and "It wasn't a problem" like he is the one who decides.

Like his childish "Tell them I say hi" over the radio when informed of his b+w flag in Brazil. He still reverts to his default - Petulant little gimp - when the pressure is on.

I know there is a time zone difference and due process, but the fact we still haven't heard a thing and it's 3pm in Qatar makes me think it's not going to happen.

Or, even worse, they're considering the implications on the title (e.g. allowing external influences impact on the decision) and it's taking them a while to decide.

For me, it's a clear as day situation: there was a double-yellow; he didn't slow; from what I can see, he's acknowledged the car in front. It's a penalty - simple.

It shouldn't even take time for the stewards to decide as it is as clear as day and stretching it out is simply making the F1 stewards even more of a farce.

I think they have to give him a penalty, it's just whether they can justify it being three instead of five. I think they're bending over backwards to try and work out if they can do that.

But with Bottas getting the three place penalty, anything but a five place penalty for Verstappen now would be absolutely insane.
