Ross Barkley joins Chelsea, er, Villa on loan

The problem is with that is he was decent back then. Chelsea wouldn't have gone in for him if he wasn't international class would they?

I think he just struggled leaving Everton, he had another minor upward blip at Villa where he looked the part (see the 7-2 game for instance) but he obviously isn't 100% happy with something in his life or fallen out of love with football. This happens.
I personally think with Barkley it's akin to the Francis Jeffers thing. He has the talent but can't deal with the pressure in the top flight. Not knocking him for that, as I used to fall apart in real matches at under 12s when I went through on goal (with no problems in a friendly kick about) so I can't imagine what it is like at that level in the social media age.
But I do think football at the top level is half talent and half being able to deal with the intensity of the expectations and pressure.

He made those expectations greater for himself by moving to a bigger club with bigger expectations but even at Everton, I remember he wasn't playing well consistently (a lot of spooney shots) and finding him frustrating.

Now he has another even worse thing psychologically to deal with believing that he's not good enough and that others believe it too.

It's a long way back but I do think he has the talent.

He should drop down a division.
It wouldn't necessarily make a difference, the problem seems to be upstairs and he doesn't seem fully invested in actually being a top pro. Technically he's up there with anyone but he isn't a complete package, he has a lot of baggage which to me effects his game. He's a strange one, all the ability in the world but not the application to use it to his advantage.

I'm assuming a lot here but that's how it comes across to me.

Unless there has been some life defining happenings in his life, marriage parenthood loss of a parent, or he is doing what Pickford did with psychology input.

Can't see what's changed in the negatives you raise.
