Everton Summer transfers 2021

Yeh and he can be of value, as a back-up, this season, like he was already contracted to do.

Why does he need another year? He's only going to retire/leave on a free regardless. It's just one of the most pointless things I've seen this Summer.

It only makes sense if we sign his long term replacement in the next couple of weeks and Coleman is his back up for the next two years and then we look to fill that slot in the squad with someone from the academy.

That would be too logical for everton though so I expect us to go with Coleman and Kenny this year

I am not shocked in the slightest, I remember us giving Hibbert a 2 year extension when he’d played about 4 games in 2 seasons.

Because it shows value and appreciation for someone who we clearly want around the club for longer than another year. It's pretty simple.

Why on earth is anyone bothered about this? He's 32 but still streets ahead of Kenny and a model pro.

He'll hopefully be the back-up right-back this season. Did people seriously think we'd sign a right back and release him on a free or something?

…he was also effective in a few cameos off the bench last season.

it seems a succession of managers seek his counsel, it’s that type of impact we as fans know little about.

The logical thing would be to sell Kenny, sign a quality RB, bench Coleman, sign someone like that Djed Spence, loan him back out, next season have a quality RB and a Djed Spence-like reserve.

The latter will be absolutely abysmal and negligent if it happens.

But giving Coleman a one-year extension has no bearing on it.

We don't have a good right-back at the club bar Coleman. He just no longer can play the games. We don't have an academy player ready to step up in that position, and they won't be ready in a year's time.

So, if we say Coleman's contract runs down and, for whatever reason, he then feels like he's not wanted, he leaves next year, and we're in the same position of having to buy a new right-back, but a right-back that is a back-up to the player we are *hopefully* (and really, really should) get this window.

He can join the coaching staff if he wants next Summer not be on our bench.

Coleman would be a better back-up than a younger player who needs games to develop.

That goes for this year or next year.

He's not a bad player. He just can't play the volume of minutes we've stupidly been relying on him for.

But this is probably his last extension, and there's nothing really wrong with it.

Now, my issue is we we'll probably happily get rid of someone like James because that is very Everton.

We can't afford that, we can hardly afford one right-back, never mind two.

Boro have quoted £5m for him with 2-years left on his deal. He was just an example of a cheap understudy since the world is filled with them.

And if you throw that on top of a player like, say, Dumfries (or someone of that quality, it's just an example), then you're looking at £20-25m total. Which we don't have.

We have to get creative but giving Coleman a one-year extension - you'd imagine on the same terms - isn't going to really do us any damage. He's the club captain and if you want your captain to stick around, you don't just let them get into the last 6 or so months of their deal.
