And usually when that happens it’s a quick visit to a school/church/shopping centre/cinema/general gathering of people with an AR-15

Look, I'm with you guys on this one. The people in the wilderness can keep the rifles to keep wolves from eating their livestock. People can have a shotgun for home defense as long as it stays there.

I'd take the rest.

This might not be an exact parallel, so bear with me. But I view the position of England's football team in this tournament as being similar to the predicament the Brazil team of 1970 and the Argentina team of 1978 found themselves in: knowing that any succss would be used as an affirmation of a regime.

You can be sure if England reached the final on Sunday and won it the government would exploit it to the full and the about to be massively out of control Covid19 infection rates thereafter will be lost in an avalanche of jingoism.

As said, not an exact parallel, as we dont live under a military junta. But it's not so much of a stretch to be dismissed out of hand.

Seek professional help.

Genuine advice that.

Are the England team working hand in hand with the government, to assist with this soon to be avalanche of jingoism ?

I only ask this, as you have previously alluded to the fact, that the England team are representing the Tory party on the pitch.

The English media is an embarrassment to us expats. I'm cringing at the thought England not winning this thing. I might have to
stop going out wearing my Everton stuff until people stop smirking and find something else to laugh at.
The local media are happy to remind us that we haven't won, or even played in a final for fifty-five years.

I'm genuinely interested to see how tonight goes

England probably have the better overall players but the Danes have incredible team spirit and unity, and that could end up being the difference

If England win again with Sterling playing a key role then he 100% has to be in the discussion for Player of the Tournament IMO

UEFA are in on the conspiracy too, that’s why they’ve rigged the tournament in England’s favour and made them play at their home stadium.

I make Denmark the favourites today. The match is being broadcast on ITV, the English media has been embarrassing yet again so they’ll be inspired by that, their Viking Spirit, with the knowledge that Valhalla awaits them and the spirit of Christian Eriksen. England don’t have that and all the pressure is on England and we know how that goes. I’ll be utterly shocked if England progressed.
It’s also raining heavily today. The last time it rained this much was against Scotland. So it’s all going Denmark’s way. I’m putting money on the Danes to qualify, that’s how certain things are.

I won't find the definition for the slang usage in question there.

You are also raging in the above post I quoted, if we're going with that usage. The definition of that one in American English is "to go off about something". I believe that in the King's English, you change the verb and reverse the preposition. It becomes "to be on about something", which is weird to us Yanks but those of us on both sides of the pond have already realized that our respective versions of 'English' are about as mutually intelligible as Spanish and Portuguese.

For some reason, we're the Portuguese-speakers that generally understand you, but you're the Spanish-speakers that can't understand us unless we learn your lingo. I'm not really sure why that is.

Bore off topic bell whiff.

Don't you mean the other way around? I've been watching American TV all my life, far more than most Americans have been watching British TV I'd wager and I'd like to think I have a better understanding of American culture/language than most Americans have of our British culture simply because I don't think most Americans have been exposed to it (changing a bit now due to the internet but still). Not having a go, it's just England can't compete with the US media and Hollywood, etc.
