Of course it is if you have to evaluate the squad to decide whether you want your country to win a game or not.

Do you want Everton to lose games if you don't like some of the players then?

I think its more of a degree of being arsed about them. 1990, 1996, were really engaged with them, since then, I have followed them, but when they have gone out, it felt nothing like the earlier tournaments. But this group have produced the same levels of arsed again. In the last WC and this one comp.

I mean I don't particularly like international football and as you say not that arsed about England but they're still my team and my nation and I want them to win every game they're in whilst still not being so arsed.

Personally just don't get how people like or dislike them. To me it's just a case of supporting your nation in any sports or athletics etc.

Unless they're a pack of convicted paedos or something.
Support them yeah. But still some of the players we've had over the years have been difficult to like. In this squad there's Henderson (for obvious reasons) and possibly Maguire. The rest all seem good lads and very likeable.

There's also a togetherness about them that is quite endearing.

i don't care at all about the qualifiers etc so when it comes to the international tournaments i just look at the team and think whether i want the players in that squad to win it. if i watch the match on tv, i need to want the players to do well to get into it.

no need to bring ribery into this.
He's French anyway lol

Haha. you actually meant Ribery the player.

Feel a bit if a tit now. lol

That's not a stat, now this is a stat: Of the two tournaments Wales have appeared in we have been knocked out by the eventual winners. Brazil in '58 and Portugal '16. Denmark 2020(1) to make it a hat trick?
You lost at the quarter final stage to Yugoslavia in 1976. Czeckoslovakia won it. 8 teams qualified and four teams went through to the sf and final in Yugoslavia.

All very strange that one, I knew it was classed as a quarter final so I did look it up before posting just to see did Yugoslavia win it. However it does indicate that was in the 'qualification stage' for the tournament.
I vaguely remember it. Think Wales lost 2 nil away then won 1-0 at home and a lot of controvesy over a goal which would have possibly taken the game to extra time iirc. Not sure though.

Just checked, was one each in Wales.

I would posit that there are levels of fandom, and that we move through them across time and space.

None of us get completely crushed or positively uplifted by sports the way we did when we were kids with nothing else to worry about, except on those rare occasions when we do.

The qualities of the people and situations that have to be involved for us to return to that level of emotional connection vary from person to person.
