Footie was different back then....personally I don't konw what went on within the walls of the rs but it's well documented that he wasn't welcome anywhere near the pit or their training ground so he asked if he would be welcome at Bellefield and come in and have a cup of tea and enjoy being around footballers and the banter etc.
It helps that Shanks was a good human being with his socialist upbringing .

The problem that he'll have if he wants to be a disciplinarian, beyond the obvious observation that these millionaire loafers don't care as long as they keep getting paid, is that the players know that the crowd won't give Benitez any cover, they're not going to be on his side. So, if he drops a player, for example, and the team loses, the player can mouth off on Twitter or via his agent and a proportion of the fans will support the player over the manager. It's just a terrible appointment for a dozen different reasons not just the "small club" meme that all the Benitez fans have latched on to as the "only" reason people like me don't want him. I can't see a scenario where he succeeds here. He'll always be three bad results away from mutiny in the stands.
Correct.
And if you think matchday team selections have been criticised before, wait for this season. It will all be: “he is taking the pisś, he doesn’t get us, he wants to be sacked for his massive pay off.” Etc

The club have actually managed this well.

A sort of pre-announcement, announcement today so everyone clear on what is happening on Tuesday or even Monday.

Things seem to have settled down today a good deal.

Whatever people's views, an element of certainty tends to calm things down a bit.

Yeah, by the time it's official a lot will just be like, 'get on with it now, but I'm still not happy with you' haha

Again, it's not about points. Anything less than 8th would be disappointing. However many wins/draws is needed to achieve that next season is the minimum amount I want us to get.

Different seasons require different points. Last season was strange. 18th got only 28 points. 2nd got only 74. You expect more points from both the top and bottom teams.

Ok. I'm just asking you for how many points you want us to get over and above 59. It's not meant to be a trick question. If you don't want to give the manager a points target fair enough.

Well it's light years from Spurs efforts. People may have been angry and frustrated but we haven't been openly knocked back by anyone, let alone half a bus full of managers as Spurs have, knowing in April they needed someone.

They are a running joke this summer from a starting position that was much more advantageous than ours.

They're also about to get worse as Kane is off.

They reeled us out and reeled us in a few times. We're knackered with a big hook in our gobs waiting to be hit with a rock.
