Putting aside the fact that I utterly detest the man and some of the legitimate concerns we might have on the footballing side of things, there are two things I keep coming back to which are massively worrying as far as Benitez goes

1) Moshiri and the board are, by now, well aware of the depth of feeling on the matter yet they are pressing ahead with it regardless (as far as we can tell). This says to me that they simply don't care about the feelings of the fanbase. You're almost never going to get a consensus when you appoint a new manager (this thread is proof enough of that), but when the depth of feeling about this potential appointment is as negative as it is and they move forward regardless, the disconnect between the ownership and the fans would appear to be the biggest it has been in an awfully long time.

2) There have been more and more suggestions that Benitez represents a safe pair of hands and some modicum of stability and this is important in our run up to BMD - all well and good and a reasonable enough point to exclude the bigger gambles like Ferguson, Potter etc. What this neglects to take into consideration is that Benitez will have no leeway whatsoever from a large section of the fanbase. You'll have some people who simply won't even go while he's there (granted, I expect that number to be quite small) but you'll have a significant number in the fanbase who will turn on him at the first opportunity. Crowds are likely to be allowed back from the beginning of the season and this won't help Moshiri and co on this front because if we have a bad run, Benitez will likely not be afforded the "he needs time" line that most new bosses get. If he supposedly offers stability, a poor run of form simply won't be tolerated and the place will turn toxic. Like the end of the Martinez era but on the juice. That isn't stability. It is the complete opposite. It will be like the regime is teetering on the edge the whole time it's in place.

I don't think he's coming to embarrass us. I don't think he gives a flying about us. I do think he's coming for the money and the convenience.

Professionally, their reputations all suffer if it goes badly. His reputation is the one which has waned the most of all the candidates yet I'd bet he'd be negotiating the highest salary of all.

All assumptions though really.

I just don't think he'd want the job based purely on money and convenience, especially considering where he's come from and the hostility he would get if things went sour.

If it were a Jose for example, I'd purely put that down to money or some other reason than purely management.

I do think Rafael's interest is purely management base cos I think he's got enough money since the China stint.

I think people are over reacting.

He's a professional - and has shown to be reasonably good at his job through his career. While at the rs he played the professional game and said the right things to wind up the local rivals and get his own fans on board. Can you imagine the things he could say to make the rs apoplectic if he comes here? He'll just say whatever script.

So long as we play good football and the players perform then I'll be happy with him. If we win a pot I'll be delighted.

Peter Reid, Kevin Sheedy and many others came over from the dark side once they saw the light.

I guess the difference between a fan and the board is that they have to decide what they think is best for the club and best for their financial interest. As such their decision is who is a safer bet with their money.

We can have an opinion, we can get all high and mighty about our individual opinion, our investment is our passion and a few quid for a season ticket. Their investment (meaning Moshiri) is rattling on at half a billion, Brands has staked his whole reputation and Kenwright some soaking tear-stained hankies.

Ultimately, it is their toy top do with as they please, If a few thousand walk away, they have a waiting list as long as your arm. Simply put, apart from a wailing and breast beating, they don't (and should not) give a toss.

He is our only hope of competing financially mate
No he isn’t, there are others out there looking to invest in football.
Moshiri needs to wake up to the fact that he’s completely naused up from the day he bought in.
Failed to bring in a new board…
Failed with multiple managerial selections…
Wasted a third world debt in allowing humungous amounts of money to be splashed on crazy wages for largely bang average players…
Overseen and agreed the sale of Barkley, Stones and Lukaku, the best goal scorer we’d had in over 20 years !!!
And has talked drivel about voodoo.
And still there’s no funding in place for the stadium project

I don’t buy the argument that he won’t be motivated. He must understand the risks. You would like to hope the board do as well. The most probable outcome is that it will end badly for him. This team is well capable of losing a few on the bounce and the place will be toxic.

Just a reminder that yesterday we had 4 contrasting Rafael stories.
The board had cooled on him following fan backlash, Rafael had backed away following advice from friends, Usmanov wants Rafael (not sure how anyone would know that) and then Rafael edges closer following ‘secret’ meetings

the risk we take with him is less than with Nuno or Potter. We've got a toxic squad, and we are going to need a very strong character to deal with it. We finished the season comfortably the worst team in the division, with the team split into distinct camps and obvious bad blood.
And if this goes ahead we’ll start the season with the team still split into distinct camps and obvious bad blood, closely followed by the Goodison crowd in distinct camps and even worse bad blood!
It’s a recipe for disaster!
