You are right in saying it is meant to replace the Champions League, but you are wrong on the format. It's a minimum of 18 games per club (champions league at the moment is a minimum of 6). so these clubs are going to have a much bigger commitment to European games and would probably have to field weakened sides in domestic competition to make up for that. But in their eyes they can do that in the league because where they finish in the domestic league doesn't affect their super league status.

They will still finish high up but yeah they might disrespect the league. City gave basically 2 teams just means the other 5 will as well.
