Champions League revamp

Has anyone considered that Sky/BT may not reduce the payments in absence of the 6 as they haven’t been included in the super league? They may well back the “new” premier league to compete with the super league?? Speculate to accumulate.

They'll lose significant advertising revenue without the top six, not to mention probably the majority of those fans no longer wishing to subscribe.

Whatever way you you at it, its a much reduced payment for the remaining clubs.

It shouldn’t be forgotten, that if they did leave the premier league, the remaining competition becomes something completely new.

The golden goose of the PL was not built because people liked United or Liverpool (Liveprool have been abysmal for most of its PL existence). It was built on the unique circumstances that only British football can provide. The noise of the fans, the weather, the calendar over Christmas, anyone being able to beat anyone, different styles of football leading to entertainment. British fans (until recently) will not accept 90 minutes of turgid possession trying to keep a clean sheet, they won’t accept teams giving up in any game because ‘ah well it’s Real Madrid no point having a go’ like some continental teams do.

All these conditions will still be there but even better. Can you imagine the bear pit atmospheres of a post covid premier league that any of about 10 clubs could win and any of about 14 could get top 4, every single result would be unpredictable, no more City or Liverpool winning every game and some of them by 5 or 6. It would be absolute carnage and TV gold, viewers would once again flock to this product rather than watching a game with nothing on it between Juventus and Atletico Madrid both trying to keep a clean sheet in a league neither will win.

People have forgotten which goose laid them golden egg, it definitely wasn’t those six teams that pulled the tv viewers in.

the gap will grow if they stayed as they are playing in a closed shop tournament.

If they go (and they should be kicked out) then at least it will make the EPL competitive but money will drop significantly. But you know what it will still survive and at least we have fair competition rather then becoming a feeder club for these 6 with no hope of challenging.

they simply have to go even to the detriment of the EPL

For the long term survival of the EPL I think they've got to be kicked out. Relegation, points deduction, fines, etc. will not be enough to stop the permanent power imbalance that the ESL will create. They'll overcome any lesser punishment over time and completely dominate football.

Yes, the EPL will suffer financially in the short term but as others have pointed out, a new "Super Six" or whatever stupid name you want to call it, will emerge. It's the same in any sport. The major teams are not eternal and are always cyclical. People will tune in, in their droves, as long as the league has good quality.

I'm concerned by the comments from Moshiri about points deduction. It seems far too short-sighted.

If or Chelsea break, it's massively up in the air. I can imagine United and Liverpool dying in their swords here as tmhey have probably made promises but not some of the others.

I reckon Chelsea and City will stay, maybe the other 2. Will be hilarious if Liverpool, United, Real Madrid and Juventus make the leap and have to play a bunch of American teams at huge cost. The project is in all likelihoods not viable. The question is, how deep have certain clubs gone into this.

Imagine them having to suck-hole us and the likes of Villa - instead of the usual suspects lol
Spitty will be booted into touch very quickly.

I agree.

I'm saying what I think will happen.

Do I think Premier League will have courage in their conviction and play the bigger picture?

Absolutely not.

TV money controls the game now, and the audiences are with the 6.
Whilst I agree with what you're saying mate, that reality is proper grim.

With all the statements that have been coming out across the national footballing spectrum, unless this acts as the catalyst for serious and widespread reform of the national game then it's a complete farce. The FA & the Premier League can preach all they want.. but if a decision is made primarily based on the financial health of the game then basically we're doomed at this point.

United and Liverpool have masterminded it. Barca and Real have to join as they can’t afford not to such is their economic position. That’s why I genuinely think it’s happening now because I don’t think those two clubs can even wait another season. The Italian clubs just want money that Serie A will never be able to give them.

Chelsea and City don’t need money though. They feel to me like the most likely two to break from it.

I guess this stupid SL will have novelty value for a season or two. But what happens if the football is as boring as crap and your team is quickly out of contention? Meanwhile there is exciting football and real competition in the old EPL. I can see the SL turning into a football version of pro wrestling - scripted, fake, bizarro football.

Excellent from BHA:

Brighton issue a statement on the ESL

Ahead of today’s Premier League meeting involving the 14 clubs who haven’t signed up to be part of a European Super League, Brighton & Hove Albion has issued the following statement on behalf of Tony Bloom (chairman), Paul Barber (chief executive and deputy chairman), Dan Ashworth (technical director), and Graham Potter (head coach):

Brighton & Hove Albion are totally opposed to plans for a breakaway European Super League as it would destroy the dreams of clubs at every level of the domestic game.

These plans are the latest in an alarming and growing list of clandestine attempts from a small group of clubs whose actions would be wiping out close to 150 years of football’s tradition, competition, and sporting progress through merit.

The ups and downs of football – promotion, relegation, winning titles and cups, challenging for, or missing out on, a European place – are all part and parcel of the drama, jeopardy, joy and heartbreak that makes our game the most watched and most loved in the world.

These key attributes create significant value from which we feed a financial support structure which helps to sustain football at every level in our country and well beyond. By contrast, a European Super League would concentrate value for the benefit of a small number of clubs.

The efforts to create a closed-shop for all but the largest clubs demonstrate a clear lack of respect for the contributions of all clubs within the domestic leagues in this country and across Europe.

Plans for a European Super League also totally disregard fans, the lifeblood of our sport at professional levels, and fly in the face of the views and wishes of the overwhelming majority of football supporters of all clubs.

These clubs, like Brighton & Hove Albion, invest heavily to support their own dreams, and those of their fans, to play at the highest level they can, and to help create a sense of pride in their own clubs across the country.

Off the pitch, we remain custodians of our clubs on behalf of past, present and future generations of fans and the communities we all represent. This is a responsibility we believe we must all take very seriously.

It has been hugely encouraging to see universal opposition and widespread condemnation from across the game from various football authorities, fans, players, commentators, pundits and media, and all-party opposition in government.

We will continue to work with those groups, including the UK government and MPs of all political parties, football’s governing bodies and all of our colleagues across football to oppose and defeat these plans.

We are fully committed to a thriving domestic league and pyramid with the ultimate reward of European competition for achievements and success on the field. We remain open to a transparent, calm and rationale dialogue with all clubs to achieve this.

Unnecessary dig at continental teams imo, football fans are generally the same all over the world (still don't trust yanks though)
