Trying to figure out what rules they are actually breaking? Get they can denounce it and be horrified etc; but difficult to see how they can just ban / deduct points etc

I don’t think this will stick. The World Cup without the best players isn’t as valuable for sponsorship. Many of the very best players are contractually tied to these 12 clubs. Money has fuelled much of this and I have a feeling that those in charge will not stick to their guns.

I’m guessing they’ll be able to cancel their contracts as they’ll have incentives for league games which they’ll no longer have.

It all depends on how much solidarity the rest of football act with - if it’s as it’s been today, I think this might end up positively.

However if someone (the PL) rolls over for these scumbags then yes the sport is over.

There would be court cases against the associations - EPL, UEFA, and Fifa - in the event of stripping of titles, banning of players from internationals, expulsions etc, I would think. The action that UEFA took against Man City didn't turn out exactly as planned by UEFA. These are rich clubs... However, I think this may be a negotiating tactic
