There are two tom davies.
When he's bad he can be abysmal.
When he's good he is good enough for a mid table side.
Better than most lately but when you look at our midfield creativity thats not saying to much.

He worked harder than anyone last night but he the gulf of quality between him and bissouma was like night and day. It’s not just ability it’s temperament. If we would have had a Allan Gomes and Doucoure midfield playing yesterday there is no way Brighton would have bossed that midfield. James would have been further up the pitch to hurt the opposition more too.

...he does at least take the ball on the spin and tries to be brave and transition to attack. Saying that, it clearly demonstrates how brilliant Leon Osman was.

Davies is another who lacks athleticism but he’ll be ok to have around if we get much required runners & pace across the midfield.

It may have even been better if it was Allan,Doucoure and Davies.

Gomes has been consistently poor in most games .

Davies is good enough for the squad but can’t be the central figure in a team with lofty ambitions. A while ago I wrote that Richarlison is not gold enough to be your best player as he’s not able to influence games enough. But he is good enough to be part of a team with leaders who run football matches. Like his role for Brazil. Davies is similar.

Welcome to the site Mr Klopp, get them excuses in

?

He's hard work.

How many times is he MOTM?

How many times does he stand out?

How many times does he do *something*

Can he play any purposeful ball forward? Is he capable of ever scoring or contributing regularly? If not - what does he offer off the ball?

He's just... meh to me.

But lets not piss the bed.

He is a useful squad player. As yesterday's bench demonstrated, you need a squad.
He is only 22.
He is exposed in a midfield without someone like Doucoure or Allan. He did well at Anfield alongside Doucoure/Gomes.

I think his better Everton performances come in a team that has some balance.

We need better, but he's a useful squad player.

Sometimes, just sometimes someone isn't world class or the absolute worst. There's a middle ground. Average still exists.

Thought he struggled a lot last night and his passing was poor. Bissouma gave us a lesson in how to play in the middle of the park.

I like Tom but a midfield of Davies Sigurdsson and James is completely wrong for this league. There are no legs and none of them are renowned tacklers. James actually put in a decent shift in the second half and won a few challenges. Davies tracked back well on a number of occassions but also allowed players to ghost past him several times too.

Davies should stay in the squad because he's a useful player, but he's not someone you can rely on to carry a midfield. He needs help from agile players around him. That's basically the biggest problem in our squad. Far too many players who don't have the skills required and need to rely on others. Some of our players also play like some of the less glamorous parts of the game don't apply to them and are optional.
